Did Zuffa Make the Right Move with Takanori Gomi?
Written by Joshua Taylor

I have been pondering this move ever since Zuffa formally announced the signing of Gomi. Obviously Gomi, as of late, hasn’t yet proven himself to be the fighter he was from 2004 through 2006, but he still possesses star power and big potential. The UFC may have a superstar on their hands if they handle him right. However, my issue is that the UFC already has lots of stars.

FightLockdown's Annual MMA Awards

Ladies and gentlemen, the year has finally come to an end, and with it comes time to reflect on the past twelve months in the world of Mixed Martial Arts.  The overriding story in the past year is that 2009 has seen MMA take a higher profile in the mainstream North American media than ever before.

Between the coverage the UFC has regularly received on ESPN, to CBS and Showtime coming to agreements with a legitimate MMA organization, exposure for the sport is at an all time high.  Even Canadian broadcasters got in on the trend as all three major sports networks in the country regularly feature MMA in one fashion or another. The struggling Japanese MMA scene even received some good news when the ratings for K-1 Dynamite!! 2009 came back at 16.7%, beating out Japan's #1 comedy show in the coveted NYE ratings race.

All in all, 2009 has been a good year for the sport.  However, we're not here today to discuss the state of the union, as it were.  We're here to look at some of the best and brightest from the past year, as decided by FLD's members themselves.  Continue on for FLD's first annual MMA awards.

The True Face of Women's MMA (it ain't pretty)

With the Cyborg - Coenen fight coming up at the end of the month, I thought we should take a look at MMA’s female phenomenon and current Strikeforce champion, Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos’, focusing on her impact on the future of women's MMA.

When Carano was scheduled to fight Cyborg, forums and websites lit-up with "Beauty vs. the Beast" analogies. While such parallels may be considered fair by popular perception, it certainly isn't very respectful towards women's MMA, nor its athletes. After all, Gina is definitely an exception and not the rule, and that's the way it should be. A bunch of dainty, sorority girls, sissy-slapping each other for three five minute rounds does nothing for the integrity of the sport.

Think about it. How irritating would it be to constantly hear MMA media pundits ragging on male fighters because they don't resemble the cast of Twilight? A silly premise, I know, but certainly a comparison that sheds light on the absurd evaluation many of us are guilty of bestowing upon female athletes.

The Sloppy Slugfest series took a little hiatus during the holidays, but it's back in 2010 with a vengeance.

In addition to being wildly entertaining, the first fight featured in 2010 can also help us shed light on one of MMA's most hotly debated recent topics, the MINOWAMAN!!!-Sokoudjou Super Hulk Final.  That's for later though, first it's time to kick back, relax, and check out the first sloppy slugfest of the new year.
