His contest with Dustin Hazelett at UFC 108 marked Paul Daley’s 33rd professional MMA fight, and his second outing in the UFC’s welterweight division; it also gave him his second win in the UFC, with yet another knockout in the very first round. With the fighters exchanging kicks early and Hazelett appearing to be comfortable standing with the Brit, Daley landed the first telling blow of the night; a crushing left hook (his favourite shot) that sent the submission specialist crashing to the canvas. What followed was a series of blows from inside of Hazelett’s guard that left him stiff and brought on an excellent stoppage from the referee, Herb Dean.
With two imposing performances in the UFC thus far, and Daley looking as though he is improving with each fight, it seems that several media outlets, his legions of fans, and the UFC as well, are getting slightly carried away with Daley’s potential impact on the welterweight title picture. Yes, he has had two dominating victories. Yes, they were both against UFC top 10 welterweights (going by FightLockdown.com’s rankings prior to the fights), and yes he has some of the best stand-up in MMA. That still doesn’t draw attention from the fact, however, that Daley’s glaring weakness just happens to be the strength of several of the top 170lb fighters in the UFC’s growing stable; his grappling.

Tomorrow night from the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Zuffa LLC will be bringing us its most injury beleaguered MMA card ever, UFC 108: Evans vs. Silva. Instead of discussing the struggle involved in keeping this card alive, Jamie Hughes, Brad Taschuk, and Matt Bremner, will be keeping Dana White off their backs by breaking down the fights actually taking place. Hold onto your umbrella because another forecast is coming your way!

The issue of weight-cutting as a ‘quick fix’ to a fighter’s divisional troubles came to me as an interesting subject for discussion following B.J. Penn’s destruction of Diego Sanchez at UFC 107. Not to take anything away from Penn’s phenomenal performance, but it’s hard for me to sit back and honestly say that Diego Sanchez’s transition to 155 has been a wise move for his career. Sanchez’s drop was inspired by two back-to-back defeats and the allure of physical advantages (strength and conditioning) he would supposedly hold over his fellow competitors at lightweight. But where have those advantages been displayed? Certainly not in his last three fights, which I will get to, but first, let’s take a stroll down memory lane..

Last Friday on the Bodega, we brought some Christmas themed brawling with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Dan Henderson's second encounter, which took place right around the festive season. This week, Friday just happens to fall on New Year's Day, and in the MMA world, we all know what New Years means... epic Japanese fisticuffs. No matter your feelings on Japanese MMA as a whole, they certainly own the nightcap to every year in terms of the most entertaining MMA cards. However, compared to previous year-end cards, Dynamite!! 2009 lacked a little bit of the freakshow aspect -- despite the final of the most freakshowy tournament in MMA history -- and as an ardent supporter of everything good and bad about Japanese MMA, I felt something missing.
In that vein, I feel the need to list some of the most memorable -- although not necessarily relevant -- New Year's Eve matches.

Well, it’s here, the end of the year. As always, the Japanese tradition of putting together epic New Year’s Eve cards comes to fruition, and boy, are we ever being treated. DREAM vs. WVR match-ups galore, and you know what that means? Fanboys raging on the interwebz, and yes, yet another forecast – please ignore the relation between those two. On the panel today are Jamie Hughes, Joshua Taylor, Brad Taschuk, David Anthony, and Miles Hackett, who hope to give you an idea of what to expect tonight.
