The FLD Aftermath - UFC 105: Vera vs. Couture
Written by Miles Hackett

To say the very least, we've come away from UFC 105 with a lot to talk about. It's an event where the unlikely became likely, leaving many of us pulling our hair out in frustration at our faulted claims of ESP. Joining me in discussion of the fallout from a decent free televised card tonight is Matt "The Bumbaclot" Bremner, and we'll be attempting to make sense of such a bizarro-world inspired event.

This is a VERY busy MMA period and I think many of us are overlooking a fight with the potential to be an absolute barn-burner, FOTY candidate. This could very well be one of the fights that years down the road we say, "Man I remember watching that live and it was crazy!"

Personally I am super, super excited for this fight. Here is a breakdown of these fighters. I invite you to share your thoughts and anticipations for this bout and also your predictions.

K-1: Cruising Towards a New Weightclass?

The case for making a Cruiserweight division in K-1 is certainly an intriguing and exciting thought to entertain. At the moment, we have the extremely deep, talent-laden Heavyweight division which has produced some of kickboxing's most epic fights and beloved superstars such as Aerts, Hoost, Bonjasky, Hari, Le Banner, Hunt, Sefo, and countless others who are followed like religious deities. Further down the weight scale we have the relentless pace and amazing technical ability of the K-1 MAX division which has slightly overtaken the HW division in popularity, due to the consistently exciting performances of fighters such as Por Pramuk, Souwer, Petrosyan, Kyshenko, Masato, and many more up-and-comers and veterans. Despite the fact that both divisions have helped to make K-1 the dominant striking organization in the world, one has to ask the question: "why are there only two main divisions?"

Scoring in MMA - Fans Must Lead the Way (part two)

Takedowns, Pulling Guard and Scrambling to Your Feet Scored Equally.

Be it a natural bias toward wrestlers or simply a misjudgement on the rule-makers part, but takedowns in North American MMA have always been a sure-fire way to win a fight. I have yet to hear a convincing argument for this, and I doubt I ever will. The most commonly encountered response is always, “but you’re deciding where the fight goes.” I have no issue with this explanation, however, if we are to live by it, then successfully pulling guard and scrambling to your feet from the mat should hold the same value as taking your opponent to the floor. A big takedown that scores damage should still score points, for damage. A regular takedown, on the other hand, should hold not more weight than somebody effectively standing-up from bottom position. Again, none of these tactics generally come close to ending fights, so while I feel takedowns should be scored less favourably than landing a solid shot, or a close submission attempt, they still exercise superiority so they should be scored. They simply should not be the be all and end all as we have become begrudgingly accustomed to in the North American system.

First things first, I would like to preface this article by assuring you all that I am not writing it as an angry emotional Shogun fanboy, I am not writing it as a slight at MMA judges, and I am not writing it as an attention-starved journalist desperate to ride the wave of unrest that has been flowing amongst MMA fans these last few weeks. This article is written by an MMA fan, a fan who notices there is something very wrong with our sport, something that that has led critics to question its legitimacy and fans to question their very faith in what constitutes "winning" a fight.
