Last Friday on the Bodega, we brought some Christmas themed brawling with Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Dan Henderson's second encounter, which took place right around the festive season. This week, Friday just happens to fall on New Year's Day, and in the MMA world, we all know what New Years means... epic Japanese fisticuffs. No matter your feelings on Japanese MMA as a whole, they certainly own the nightcap to every year in terms of the most entertaining MMA cards. However, compared to previous year-end cards, Dynamite!! 2009 lacked a little bit of the freakshow aspect -- despite the final of the most freakshowy tournament in MMA history -- and as an ardent supporter of everything good and bad about Japanese MMA, I felt something missing.
In that vein, I feel the need to list some of the most memorable -- although not necessarily relevant -- New Year's Eve matches.

Well, it’s here, the end of the year. As always, the Japanese tradition of putting together epic New Year’s Eve cards comes to fruition, and boy, are we ever being treated. DREAM vs. WVR match-ups galore, and you know what that means? Fanboys raging on the interwebz, and yes, yet another forecast – please ignore the relation between those two. On the panel today are Jamie Hughes, Joshua Taylor, Brad Taschuk, David Anthony, and Miles Hackett, who hope to give you an idea of what to expect tonight.

On NYE, we as MMA fans will be treated to another stellar Fields Dynamite MMA/K-1 fight card, but for some reason there isn’t a whole lot of buzz surrounding it this year. Is it because in classic DREAM fashion, the fights have been announced at the last minute? Is it because of the overwhelming press coverage of the disaster that is UFC 108, which happens only two days later? Or, is it because this year’s card is missing previous year-end notables like Sakuraba, Cro Cop, and Fedor?
Honestly, I don’t know why for certain, that there isn’t more buzz surrounding this event as it includes at least nine different Top 15 ranked fighters and some real hardcore fan favorites. There are quite a few fights that will have a significant impact on the world rankings and some that have the potential to be barn burners. One of those fights that I think is being overlooked and could be an amazing match-up is Kid Yamamoto vs. Masanori Kanehara.

Welcome everybody, I hope you're enjoying your holidays, and at the Bodega we hope we can aid you in that process. Being that it's Christmas I was going through my head thinking about what I could possibly relate to this festive season, and inevitably I came to the conclusion that the PRIDE Cold Fury events were the only events which really celebrated Christmas. Ever since, events have been more geared to the more party friendly holiday of New Year's than the family friendly one of Christmas. However, PRIDE did grace us with a couple of Christmas cards (get it? Christmas cards?) which produced some fantastic matches.
My personal favorite, after going back through old DVD's is by far Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs Dan Henderson 2, although the hilarious image of Igor Vovchanchyn submitting Valentijn Overeem cannot go unmentioned. So without further ado, since if I don't go to bed soon Santa may skip my house altogether, I present you one of the many classic HW encounters that PRIDE provided us.

Not one to take second place, Zuffa is answering Strikeforce's event on Saturday night with one of their own; WEC 45: Cerrone vs. Ratcliff. As we've come to expect from the WEC, this card is stacked with a number of evenly matched bouts that could end up being nominees for FLD's coveted "fight of the year" award. Breaking the card down for you, fight-by-fight are our panel of experts made-up of Joshua Taylor, Jamie Hughes, and Brad Taschuk. See how their forecast matches-up with your own, after the leap of faith!

Alright, today at the Bodega we've got a nice special treat. Since DEEP Cage Impact 2009 is approaching -- and nobody is talking about it, surprise, surprise -- I decided to feature one of their fighters. The DEEP Bantamweight Champion is currently Masakazu Imanari, better known to most MMA fans as the sport's leading foot fetish-ist. For those of you who don't know Imanari, his nickname is "Ashikan Judan" which in English means that he'll tear your leg off and beat you with it. Actually it means "10th Dan of Leglocks", which means he's like the RicksonGraciebyArmbar of leglocks (as a sidenote: if you've been following the forums lately, you'll probably have noticed that I've been mentioning Rickson a lot. It's because I've gone back and watched a bunch of his old fights. Ostensively, a Rickson Gracie Bodega exists in your future). Anyways, enough of my getting sidetracked, proceed into the bowels of the Bodega for some leglocky goodness.
