Missed you last week bodegees since the site had some amazing developments going on with the unveiling of our Hall of Fame (be sure to check that out), but we'll make up for it today. Since there hasn't been a whole lot of awe-inspiring MMA going on since the New Year began, that means there's very little in the way of interesting fights or fighters for me to preview. So instead, I looked to our forums for inspiration for this week's bodega, and it was not difficult to find. You're all probably familiar with my penchant for loving both lighter weights and older fights, and there was a thread dedicated to one of the great early Featherweights in the sport, Alexandre Franca "Pequeno" Nogueira. Naturally, I zeroed in on this thread, and today's bodega will show off one of Pequeno's greatest fights.
Nogueira made his MMA debut in 1998, and he did it with style, defeating the man who was the greatest FW in the sport up to that point, in Noboru Asahi, via a guillotine that put Asahi to sleep. A year and a half after their first meeting, Kijin and Pequeno would meet again, in what would become one of the formative fights of the Featherweight division. I promised some of the guys on the forum that I'd find this fight, and find it I did. Observe:
This is some classic submission fighting, which will make any fan of leg locks instantly start drooling like Ricco Rodriguez over a plate of tacos. And as is almost required of a Pequeno fight, it ends with a nasty guillotine. Negligent reffing aside, this is a classic, and I find it depressing that this fight has less than 1,200 hits on youtube. Work on that.
