Brad's Friday Fight Bodega - Kaufman vs Helsel & Weekend Preview

In my years of watching MMA, I'm not sure I've ever seen a busier weekend than this upcoming one.  Sure, there have been bigger and better cards situated on the same weekend, but in terms of the sheer volume of quality shows, I don't think anything comes close to what is taking place over the next couple of days (we'll include last night as part of the weekend too).  As is always the case with MMA, the action is spread out over the globe, and the usual stomping grounds are all present (Japan, Brazil, US and Canada), as well as the most criticized promotion in the sport (no, not the UFC) once again showing a dedication to regional MMA that is beyond reproach.  Step inside the Bodega for a quick rundown of the laundry list of fights happening this weekend.

Cain Velasquez; He's Really That Good.

Ever since Cain Velasquez entered the UFC, a torrent of propagandistic marketing has followed him. From the beginning we were told that he was the “next big thing” in the heavyweight division, despite his unassuming appearance, and had the potential to not only win the belt, but to reign over the big men’s weightclass for years to come. After his performance at UFC 110, everybody should now be taking that marketing much more seriously. His imperious victory over Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira not only proved that Cain Velasquez has a veritable claim as one of the top fighters in the UFC, but also that he just might be the best heavyweight in all of MMA.

Finally, the UFC has arrived in Australia and not without a bit of gusto. UFC 110 boasts the most exciting main event since UFC 104: Machida vs. Rua, with rising HW sensation, Cain Velasquez, taking a giant leap in competition, by facing-off with the legendary Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira. Also on the card is an exciting tilt between everyone's favorite bad guy, Michael "The Count" Bisping, and everyone's favorite, Wanderlei "the Axe Murderer" Silva.

With a number of obviously interesting match-ups present on the main and preliminary cards, it's time for the FLD writing staff to bring you another epic forecast. On the panel today are Jamie Hughes, Jack Barrington, Matt Bremner, Joshua Taylor, and Miles Hackett. Check out our thoughts on this riveting string of fights, after the jump!

A very interesting couple of days coming up all around the world for MMA heads this weekend.  Of course the weekend is headlined by UFC 110, marking the promotion's debut from down under.  However, this is truly a global weekend in the sport, with solid cards emanating from Japan (ZST! 23) and in a move upstaging the UFC, Xtreme Kombat League will be staging a card in the United Arab Emirates.  Rumour has it that the card will be headlined by Christopher Lambert and Linden Ashby, and the promotion will be changing their name to the Mortal Kombat League.
