FLD's Grappling Spotlight #4: Ronaldo "Jacaré" de Souza
Written by Jamie Hughes
Tuesday, 13 April 2010 20:39
Ronaldo Souza dos Santos, better known as “Jacaré” Souza by the many BJJ and MMA fans across the globe, was born in Vila Velha, December 7th, 1979. During his younger years, Jacaré was a huge soccer fan and played regularly --preferring the role of the goalkeeper. Souza carried on playing throughout his teens up until he was seventeen when he met his first instructor and master, Henrique Machado. Machado a 5th Dan Judoka and BJJ black-belt under Osvaldo Alves immediately saw potential in the young Jacaré who was still small for his age, weighing only 50kg.

Machado took the young man under his wing because of Jacaré’s humble personality and brought him into his home, where he began teaching him day and night -- not only about BJJ, but the nutrition and mentality needed to be a top competitor. Soon after this, the ASLE academy (“Associação Sensei de Lutas Esportivas” [Sensei Fighting Sports Association]) was formed. Eventually the ASLE team merged with the well-respected and famous Team Brasa. This merger was vital towards Jacaré’s development as a grappler because whenever he was in Rio and Sao Paulo he always had access to the very best training partners.

404 Error: Your 'MMA' Cannot Be Found

The story has been conveyed in countless manners; how MMA is inexorably linked to the internet, how a group of devoted fans spread across the world saved an entire sport from extinction. Why then is it that the third most visited site on the entire internet (Youtube), seems so reviled by major MMA promotions?

Going back to the days of PRIDE, Youtube videos were a helpful tool for fans to stay up-to-date on MMA in the Far East. Presently, the biggest Japanese organization, DREAM, also allows their videos to be posted on Youtube without issue. This is an area in which the East has always been ahead of the West. Both of the major American promotions, Zuffa LLC and Strikeforce, both seem at odds with their product being freely available to the vast reaches of the cyber-verse.

Three Little Details Holding Strikeforce Back
Written by Brad Taschuk
Tuesday, 30 March 2010 23:51
In March of 2009, Strikeforce announced its arrival in the big leagues of MMA with two events. The first was the purchase of all that remained – or all that Strikeforce desired – from EliteXC. Days later, deals were announced with both Showtime and CBS to air Strikeforce cards on the networks. There were other big events in the Strikeforce timeline in 2009, but March was when the ball really got rolling. One year later, it’s safe to say that Strikeforce has been a success. The promotion has been lauded by many hardcore fans in the MMA community and has drawn positive ratings on both CBS and Showtime. The future looks bright for the San Jose based company.

However, it is also necessary to look at some of the things the organization can improve upon in their second year as a major player in the sport. These smaller details, to this writer at least, show part of the story as to why the UFC is still the biggest and best MMA promotion in town - even if they’re not always everyone’s favourite show – and why Strikeforce, while making admirable progress in 2009 and the early part of 2010, is still a distant second.
