In the previous installment of this article (located here), I addressed the problematic approach that Western MMA promotions have taken to introducing Asian fighters to the North American market. In this second segment, I’m now going to re-direct my critical gaze upon the Eastern MMA world—specifically Japanese promotions and the fighters themselves—exploring exactly how the Eastern ideology has slowed down the sport’s globalization.

Heavyweight division to heat-up at UFC 97

The UFC Heavy Weight division has been toning-up lately.  Shane Carwin beat a top heavyweight in Gabriel Gonzaga, AKA prospect Cain Velasquez has been on an impressive tear, and early prospects such as Junior Dos Santos and Pat Barry have been opening eyes.  But on April 18th, two heavyweights will go at it to establish who is close to the top of the UFC’s heavy weight division.

Tito Ortiz: The Return

What do you think when you hear the name, "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz? Some would say Tito is a whiner, or an eye of controversy in the UFC. Or maybe you think of a great light heavyweight champion, and one of the main guys who helped launch the UFC and MMA into the main stream.

Is there a future for a 195 lb division in the UFC?

With the upcoming catch weight bout between Rich Franklin and Wanderlei Silva  at UFC 99, there is much talk about a 195 lb division.  Silva has suggested to UFC President Dana White that this should become a permanent weight division.  He believes this division would be a new home for other fighters as well as himself.

10 April Fights Worth Watching

April is a great time to be an MMA fan. With seven major events scheduled and almost 40 smaller shows listed there’s bound to be some exciting matchups. It’s a rare thing when there are this many scheduled MMA events in a single month and with how slow MMA has been lately this month should really liven things up a bit. While there are always exciting fights on each card they seem few and far between these days. We haven’t seen this type of quality since the Pride Fighting Championships and UFC mega cards.
