Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos missed her target at the weigh-ins for Strikeforce: “Shamrock vs. Diaz” on Friday in San Jose.
Santos was scheduled to face Japanese submission specialist Hitomi Akano at 145lbs, but weighed in seven pounds over at 152lbs. Akano weighed in under the limit at 143.5lbs.
According to California State Athletic Commission officials, Santos has until 8 p.m. P.S.T. to cut 2.5lbs., which would put her within 6lbs. of her opponent, the maximum weight overage the state allows for bouts to take place.
“She shouldn’t have a problem cutting that by tonight,” a representative of Santos’ camp told MMAWeekly.com shortly afterwards.
The remaining main card weigh-ins for the Saturday event at the HP Pavilion went off without a hitch.
Undercard participants have yet to step on the scale.

I don't think it's fair that both Marshall and Cyborg were fined 20% but Cyborg was 5.5 lbs heaver than Marshall. He should have been fined less or she should have been fined more.
I wonder how this will affect Cyborg because it says she has to cut more to be within 6 pounds. I really think its pathetic though that the two biggest female stars cant even make weight. Makes womens MMA look bad imo.

Gina misses weight all the time. And she's a bigger name than Christane, now all of a sudden women's MMA looks bad?...
As of right now she still has 1 hour to lose the weight. It shouldn't be a problem

That is exactly my point. Carano and Cyborg are the biggest womens stars and Gina has made a habit of missing weight and now Cyborg is SEVEN pounds over?? Just makes it look bad

I agree with JT.
It doesn't look good when the two biggest stars can't make weight. Gina is the biggest name in Women's MMA and she almost always has trouble making weight.

Yeah it does look kinda bad... but she should still be able to make it.
You have to remember also that it's easier for Men to cut weight than it is for Women. So many other things come into play when it comes to women and losing weight.

If it's that hard to make the required weight, then there needs to be some sort of adjustment made to the division.

I actually wouldn't mind it if they made it 147 or 148 instead of 145.

Why don't they just make a 155 lb division. Or are Gina and Cyborg the only pro girls big enough to fight?

I wouldn't say it's a joke, but it's not exactly appealing for a lot of people to watch women fight.
Still they get in there and fight, we have no room to be critiquing them
Raise it to 150 and call it a day.

its like EliteXC's entire org....it has 2 stars, and that's it....EliteXC only had one, but the talent pool of women's mma is so shallow it's ridiculous.
they have one possible megafight....and then what? interest will be completely lost unless one of these women get beat by someone, which isn't likely.

Yeah southpaws right it is more difficult for women to cut weight, but it's not impossible. A friend of mine who does amateur boxing had to cut something like 20-25lbs and she did it in like 2 weeks.
I say if you can't make a weight (like you have failed multiple times). Then either one of two things needs to happen. Either change how you cut weight like maybe start at a smaller weight (don;t allow yourself you get too big) or Just fight at higher weight class.
Obviously there are situations where things such as physical , emotional, and mental health can affect your ability to cut weight certain times, but when it becomes habitual you need to change something.
On a related Strikeforce note. I think it's funny they are trying to sell the PPV for 29.99 on directv. When the Showtime package is just 12.99 a month.

Don't care for women's MMA so I don't care about them making weight or not.
Cyborg is fun to watch so I'll enjoy watching her tomorrow night, Gina is hot so I like to watch her but I don't follow womens MMA and I'm not going to start whether they make weight every time or miss it.

As someone that demands quality fights how can you not enjoy women's MMA?
Every single women's fight I've seen has been fast paced and filled with action. They always go in there and slug it out and are very fast on the ground.
The part I bolded is one of the stupidest statements ever. The same could have been said about MMA as a whole when it first started but someone took a risk and look where it's at now.
Women's MMA is never going to get bigger if people think it's a waste. There's a ton of talented women's MMA fighters but the problem is that most of the major orgs don't have a women's division so they don't get the exposure they deserve.

While true, it reeks of a societal double-standard. Women demand to be treated equally, even in sports, so why should we allow their biology to be an excuse for not making the grade? If women's MMA is to be taken seriously by mixed martial arts fans, the women need to take it seriously first.

no it's not dude. women's mma will never get popular, and you can quote me on that. they're will be the megafight eventually, and then what...?
look at what women's sports are at the top right now.
1) tennis - arguably more popular than men's tennis
3) volleyball
you know why they are popular?
sex appeal
they get to see girls look hot in tight skirts screaming "AHHHH"

...any good businessman knows this and this is why Dana White has steered away from it. even if there is some miraculous explosion of women's fighters pouring in, it still will just be a spectacle alongside men's...even the most promoted women's fight ever will likely not headline the strikeforce event, and after that it's doomed. there will never be an event that is just women...or at least not by any company that wants to make money.....
many mma purists don't even wanna watch that...
this kinda dips into my theory as to why mma is genetically appealing to us....women aren't supposed to fight like this....men are.

I think it has the possibility to become popular it just needs the right promoter who can put the right fights together.
There's more big fights out there besides Gina/Santos.
The only reason it wouldn't become popular is because guys can't get over the fact that it's women punching each other. There's more to it than sex appeal and if people realized that it'd become more popular.

I think women's college basketball is way more popular then volleyball.
Outside of the US women's soccer is pretty popular too.
Like I said above the problem with women's sports is men only watch it to see hot women. If they could get past that and actually look at the skill and stop thinking with their dicks then women's sports would be way more popular.
...any good businessman knows this and this is why Dana White has steered away from it. Unless there is some miraculous explosion of women's fighters pouring in....women's mma will continue to be vastly, vastly inferior to men's....as it is now
How is it inferior to men's MMA?
I agree with you that it's not as popular but to call it inferior is just wrong.
99% of the women's fights I've seen have been way more exciting technical wise then ALOT of men's fights have been.
I very rarely see a women's fight where they LnP the whole fight but that happens all the time in men's fights.
The women work as hard and probably hard then the men do and it shows in their fights.

because usually those biological barriers aren't something that's within their control. Like changes in hormones.

what right fights? there is one fight people want to see and that's it. 2 talented lower level female fighters would be on the undercard of a WEC show....they wont' get any exposure.
There's more big fights out there besides Gina/Santos.
tell that to any casual fan, see what they think...u know what percent of hardcore fans (most of them won't ever buy a women's show either anyway) buys ppv's? it's not big, and that's a problem.
The only reason it wouldn't become popular is because guys can't get over the fact that it's women punching each other. There's more to it than sex appeal and if people realized that it'd become more popular.
but is that bankable? mma is a business remember. i don't think it is.

what would make you believe they would get past it? they aren't nearly as skilled as men and very few women's sports are popular w/o huge sex appeal.
hell, look at women's soccer. what do 95% of casual fans remember most?

I agree with you that it's not as popular but to call it inferior is just wrong.
it is inferior, in every possible way. women are not the athletes that men are, that's just how it is.
99% of the women's fights I've seen have been way more exciting technical wise then ALOT of men's fights have been.
i disagree completely.
The women work as hard and probably hard then the men do and it shows in their fights.
this has to be a joke. women's training isn't nearly at the level of men's in any sport, and everyone knows this.
also, the two biggest female mma stars haven't made weight quite recently....how can you say they take it more seriously than the men? especially carano, who was busy with movie stuff admittedly....

I disagree that women's MMA will never be popular, just look at how women's soccer has grown internationally, when the idea was scoffed at initially. The problem is timing. MMA is a new sport, even for men, and usually it takes a little longer for women's version of sports to gain respect among fans.
Basically women's MMA needs to be built-up in smaller show circuits, like the Showtime events, just so that the talent can begin to develop. Once the talent pool deepens, then major promotions should start backing it, because at this point, you cannot promote an entire sport with one female fighter (obviously talking about Gina) who:
1. Isn't that great of a fighter, but is good looking.
2. Cannot make weight.
Professionalism and a lack of talent is what is holding back women's MMA, and the only cure for that is time. One day, it will be taken seriously by major promotions, just not for at least 5 -10 years IMO.

not at all, i agree that women should be given the same fair treatment as men....and with that should be given the same criticism as men
however i don't believe in being politically correct for the sake of being politically correct...i call out bs when i see it, and people saying that women can compete on the same level as men in athletics are lying to themselves...i'm a 4th year honors specialization biology student and there are fundamental laws of biology that go against this the theory that women can push themselves to the same limit men can.

I don't know why you carry those views of Womens MMA, Aaron. Casuals may not get into it, so what. Casuals think MMA is called Ultimate Fighting. Casuals don't care if a fighter makes weight or not. Casuals don't care if someone deserves a title shot or not.
The list goes on.
The fact is, I and many others on this board enjoy womens MMA. There must be something to it, even if you don't share the same taste.
On all of the CBS cards, the womens fights stole the show. And aside from Kimbo, those were pretty good cards.

I enjoy womens MMA TBH, mainly due to the fact that you're pretty much always guaranteed a good fight. I agree with Aaron in that it'll never rival mens MMA poularity wise though cos images like that one of Kim Couture just aren't something that mainstream society is ready to accept yet.
I'm with Miles when he says that if women want to be treated equally in MMA (and rightly so) that they need to be more professional weight wise and just realise that just cos it's harder for them to cut weight, doesn't mean that they don't have the same obligation as men to meet the limit. If it's so hard for them then they should ensure that they're closer to the weight before the fight so they don't have to cut as much.
It'd be the same as if Houston Alexander was always coming in over 205 and then saying it's not his fault cos he's only got one kidney. Just don't cut as much, keep your natural weight nearer to the limit, and do your job properly.

Your Avatar definitely does not support this lol.
And Miles, there is a big difference between women's soccer and women's MMA.
In soccer, you don't see women beating the shit out of each other and getting bloodied up.
In MMA, as Aaron pointed out before, most men don't like seeing women beat the fuck up. It's not that we are thinking with our dicks (directed to MJ), it's just would you want to see a woman whose face would look like David Loiseau or blood pouring out like Joe Stevenson? Yea, they have exciting fights, but to the general crowd of men, we do not like seeing women getting the shit kicked out of each other.
Oh Miles, I miss your decked out Fedor profile lol.

A lot of people find MMA too brutal though, actually until the last few years even after the rule changes a lot of people saw MMA as a "bloodsport" and thought it was way too violent.
I doubt that people like seeing any person as messed up as Kim Couture was whether they're male or female TBH.
I do think it's sort of an institutionally sexist thing in that a lot of men view women as the weaker sex and are protective over women which is why it makes them uncomfortable to see them in a fight.
The way I look at it is, if it's a good fight I could care less whether it's men or women fighting. As long as they wanna go in there and beat eac other up then I'm down for watching it.
I do realise that a lot of people don't feel comfortable with it but it's never gonna have a chance if it's just blacklisted. Shit, if something shouldn't be shown just cos some people are made to feel uncomfortable then there'd be no MMA at all on TV now.

I agree with you completely man, women fight for equal rights, so why should their sexuality negate the need for them to be equally professional to the men in their field? It's a double-standard that needs to be squashed.
And Miles, there is a big difference between women's soccer and women's MMA.
In soccer, you don't see women beating the shit out of each other and getting bloodied up.

Yes, that's a fair point that a lot of guys aren't exactly enthused about seeing women fight, but there's also a large audience of men who don't mind at all. Think about it, cat fights are pretty exciting and popular to watch and they usually end-up a lot worse than sanctioned MMA fights, due to hair-pulling and scratching.
My point is, that women's versions of sports generally have taken longer to develop into an acceptable and profitable business, unless their sexuality is selling the sport (ex: beach volleyball). Boundaries are being broken between gender binaries in all facets of life, girls are playing for highschool football teams, entering the armed forces---beyond desk and nurse jobs---and this isn't a trend that's going to stop with fighting. Fighting is fighting, people love MMA because of what it is, not because of the genitalia between the athlete's legs.
Professionalism and a deeper talent pool is what women's MMA needs before it will be accepted by promotions as a legitimate money-making movement in the sport.
Oh Miles, I miss your decked out Fedor profile lol.
Ha, I kind of miss it as well. I just think it would be best if I had a more neutral image this time, seeing as I was constantly being accused of being a "Fedor Nuthugger" by noobs, when I'm fairly neutral when assessing fights stylistically.
