View Full Version : Idea For A Forum Tournament

So I'm thinking of getting some nominations of fights that people think are the best MMA fights ever, and then putting them into either a 16 or 32 fight tournament, and have people vote on each pairing until we get down to only one fight that we can declare the Official FLD greatest fight of all time.

Anybody think this would be a good idea? If so, throwing some nominations down below.

And even if someone else has already mentioned a fight you think belongs in the tournament, write it down anyways, as I'll determine which fights gain entry based on most nominations. Criteria for fights is really an individual thing, if someone thinks a fight is the greatest ever based on what it meant and not necessarily the fight itself (i.e. Saku-Royce, Griffin-Bonnar 1), feel free to nominate it.

I'll get it started:

Saku-Newton - PRIDE 3
Newton-Pele - PRIDE 19
Big Nog-Cro Cop - FC 2003
Shogun-Lil Nog - CC 2005
Buscape-Azeredo - Bushido 6
Silva-Jackson 2 - PRIDE 28
Frank-Tito - UFC 22
Couture-Rizzo 1 - UFC 31
Diaz-Parisyan - UFC 49
Sanchez-Parisyan - UFN 6

I'll be back once I look through my archives to find some fights from smaller orgs, but there's a good start.

Fuck it, it isn't mma but not many fights can beat Hunt/Sefo.

Awesome idea Brad.

Here's another non MMA one but it really deserves to be thrown in the mix... Hug/Mirko

After scouring the interwebz, and my massive collection of dvds, I'm thinking the field might need to be expanded to 64. We could go all March Madness style, and have a bracket each for: Primarily Striking, Primarily Grappling, All-Around, and Non-MMA... that'd be a lot of work though.

EDIT: Or the brackets could be UFC, PRIDE, Other MMA, Non-MMA. So many possibilities.

SECOND EDIT: Links or Vids of those fights?

Damn, great idea Brad! I'll need some time to brainstorm.. off the top of my head:

Sakuraba/Newton
Edgar/Griffin
Rua/Nogueira
Nogueira/Cro Cop
Nogueira/Sylvia
Nogueira/Herring 1
Fujita/Fedor
Chonan/Silva
Couture/Rizzo 1
Parisyan/Sanchez - http://mixedmartialartvideos.com/2007/11/01/karo-parisyan-vs-diego-sanchez/

More will follow!

Good idea indeed. But it will take quite a bit of organization and work to get this running.

And I have a feeling over 64 fights will be mentioned...how are we going to narrow down the qualifiers?

Frye/Takayama from pride 21. This should be put under guilty pleasure fight. Little to no skill was involved, but 2 dudes just came out clinched and beat the hell out of each other until Takayama looked like he had been hit by a bus.

Another more recent one i liked was Mcdonald/ Maia. Really good ground battle Where maia wasn't completely dominant for the first time. J-mac even had Maia's back for awhile and nearly got a RNC.

Hendo v Shungo Ayoma
Rampage v Wandi 2
Diaz v Lawler
Maia v Mcdonald
Kos v Hazelett
Forrest v Rampage

more to come later

I think I'm up to the task, since I'm quite interested in seeing how this all plays out.

And I have a feeling over 64 fights will be mentioned...how are we going to narrow down the qualifiers?

I'm probably going to leave nominations open for about a week, or until the thread starts to die down drastically. The 64 fights that qualify will be selected based on the number of nominations they get. For instance, right now Big Nog-CC has 3 nominations already, and is in the lead.

Since there will likely be a tie through 64th place, I'll probably post a poll of 10 fights that are "on-the-bubble" and have the most -> least votes in that to be used as a tie-breaker.

Working on my non-PRIDE/UFC list.

this needs to be done independently if you want any legit results

I think in most cases you'd be right. Right now our forum is still at a size where it's mostly knowledgeable people, and we won't end up with Griffin-Bonnar 1 in the final or winning the whole thing though.

Here and Subfighter are probably the only two places you can do this and get a real result.

Some input in terms of fights would be greatly appreciated though.

How about Randy vs Tito or Spencer Fisher vs Stout 2. I've also got a soft spot for Fujita vs Fedor

Also MacDonald vs Maia

I nearly proposed something similar to this over at MMA forum but didn't bother for this exact reason.

Nice idea Brad, I'll post some suggestions later but I'm gonna go play some more of the demo for now.:D

A fantastic idea and believe it or not I was thinking about doing something similar but instead scoring fights on a criteria and seeing which fight scored the most points.

This is my rough draft but the criteria would've looked something like this:

How much hype was around the fight.
How entertaining was the fight.
How great was the ending of the fight.
What implications did it have on the division.

Just a rough draft but it certainly something I may do.

The first one Penn KO'd him in like 11 seconds, the second (which I think you're on about) was the draw for the title.

In the non-mma I'd like to add Ali/Frazier 3 the Thrilla in Manilla which I believe to be the best boxing match myself personally has ever seen. I've never seen a fight in any combat sport where two guys took so many power shots and didn't drop once. Too bad Ali had to give up his health for such a great fight. I don't know if you guys seen it but they have a special on HBO on the fight and I have a new found respect for Joe Frazier. It's crazy cuz Ali was begging them to cut his gloves off and they wouldn't and Frazier is begging his corner to let him keep fighting and they won't. Wow it's crazy how different history could of been. Hearns/Hagler should definitely have a spot too and probably Duran/Leonard

Round 10 was fucking amazing

You are not lying... The thing is I been a boxing fan for years but got away from it and never saw the fight until after Chico died. Sucks man... That round is what boxing SHOULD be.

Great stuff guys! 66 MMA nominations so far (16 fights with multiple noms), without me adding my expanded picks. I'm gonna have to nominate some outside the box fights, since there are some that people might not know about, but clearly deserve to be in here. There are also some pretty interesting omissions thus far.

Keep em coming!
