Controversy and debate notwithstanding, all indicators point to congenital amputee Kyle Maynard making his mixed martial arts debut in a bantamweight bout at Auburn Fight Night on Saturday at the Auburn Covered Arena in Auburn, Ala.
Now, the MMA world knows who will stand across the cage from him.
Maynard and his opponent, Fry, made weight at the official weigh-in on Friday and will meet in the main event of the nine-fight card. Fighting out of Baraboo, Wis. -- the former home of the Ringling Brothers Circus -- Fry owns a 0-2 amateur record.
“I’m not really familiar with him at all,” Maynard said. “I don’t really know his style. I think that’s, in a way, a positive thing. There will be less overanalyzing on my part.”
One the eve of his first appearance in the cage, Maynard’s participation in a gladiatorial sport has stirred debate on both sides. Denied a license by the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission in 2007, he instead set his sights on Alabama, which has no governing body to oversee and regulate MMA competition.
Because of his disability -- he was born with no hands, two rounded stumps at the elbows and two short appendages with deformed feet at the knees -- many do not believe the 23-year-old should be allowed to compete and think his being injured in the fight could leave a permanent stain on the sport.

Dude, I don't want to state the obvious, but the guy has no arms or legs. How do you propose that he is going to get the win?
The guy he is fighting does look more like he should be working at Game Crazy instead of fighting mma though, that's for sure. Those arms look like toothpicks, but, at least he's got some. I think that gives him the competitive advantage. :D

This is just crazy, its a nightmare for the sport of MMA in my opinion.
While I appreciate what Maynard has accomplished in his Wrestling, I can see no way in hell that a semi competant opponent would not be able to punt him across the room.
This has disaster written all over it.

He is always considered a downed opponent, I believe.

Watching him "step" over to mount in that video made me crack up like you don't even know. Clearly they found the scrubbiest of all scrubs to fight this guy, but I'm still not sure how Maynard is going to be able to close the distance to take dude down.

I know this is plazz's deal and all, but I couldn't wait for him to come around, so...

I hear Rickson was planning on coming out of retirement to face him but he saw Maynard as too much of a risk.

I was thinking that earlier y'know. I wouldn't be surprised if this fight was fought almost entirely on the ground and I wouldn't be much more surprised if Maynard pulled off a UD.
I wonder how many dudes they had to approach before someone actually took this fight. You've gotta try and beat up a kid with no arms or legs in a room full of people, that's a lose-lose situation if I ever saw one.

Ya I also think Kyle will win.. I really doubt he will get knocked out if hes always considered a downed opponent. Also Kyle is naturally a much larger person then his opponent.. he weighs the same with no limbs.. I dont know why.. but this makes me believe itll be really hard for this guy to KO Kyle or even hurt him with his punches. Its like a 135er fighting a 185er with no arms or legs lol
randyspankstito
04-25-2009, 04:32 PM
So does he really always count as a downed opponent?
Even if he is, you could still hit him with some NASTY kicks to the ribs that would probably have him thinking that maybe it was a bad idea to be the worlds first limbless mma competitor.
I wonder if that guy is strong enough to pick him up and toss him?
This just has bad news written all over it. I hope the ref is standing close by to keep stop it. The last thing mma needs is some cripple with a point to prove getting himself killed.

according to sherdog. Fry landed less than a dozen punches and Maynard spent most of the fight ankle biting Fry. Maynard also couldn't get gloves to fit so he wasn't allowed to strike...

Maynard 1; critics 0
By Jake Rossen (jake@sherdog.com)
Sunday, 12:14 a.m. ET: An able-bodied but ineffective Kyle Maynard impressed critics but not judges Saturday when he met Bryan Fry in an Auburn Fight Night mixed martial arts competition held in Auburn, Ala.
Maynard, who fights at 135 lbs. and was carried into the ring on piggyback, slipped punches with ease but was unable to close the distance and spent the majority of the nine-minute bout running sprints at Fry’s legs. Fry earned 30-27 scores for the decision, but appeared unwilling or unable to mount any sustained offense against Maynard, landing less than a half-dozen strikes to his head and torso during the fight.
Prior to the opening bell, it was announced that Maynard couldn’t secure his gloves, possibly due to arena humidity, and was therefore not allowed to strike.
It’s worth noting that Maynard, by virtue of his missing limbs, is likely substantially stronger than slimmer peers in the 135 lb. class, and that his upper arms are calloused blunt-force instruments that appear to pack some power in training footage. It’s also worth noting that Maynard makes me feel like an inadequate, lazy slob.
The extent of Maynard’s exile -- to Alabama, a state with no athletic commission to veto his goal -- was on ready display during the morbid $14.95 Internet broadcast, which resembled a snuff film thanks to the grainy stationary camera pointed at a square cage. The action was halted early on for an opponent to retrieve a missing tooth; “Big Willie’s Hot Dogs” was thanked during commentary; the commentators grew increasingly inebriated as the night wore on. Carnegie Hall it wasn’t.
I would hope and expect Maynard has had his fill of MMA: not getting seriously hurt seems to be a point well proven. No one climbs Everest twice.
Well, some people do, but those people are insane.
Achievement recorded, Kyle. Now don’t go giving your mother another anxiety attack.

Do we need anymore proof that Alabama sucks?

Wow so his opponent was unwilling to hit him and he survived 3 rounds?
The guy is an impressive athlete but he had no business fighting in MMA and this doesn't change my opinion at all.

This should not have taken place and I sure hope that there is not a second fight.

Haha yea everyone who said I should feel bad for making fun of him needs to take note of the fact the guy got a piggy back to the cage?
When was the last time a sober man got a piggyback ride?

O don't worry though i'm well aware that i'm going to hell. Or maybe better yet and more fitting. I'm gonna see this guy on the street somewhere and he's gonna kick my ass........ Ok poor choice of words, but's he would prob umm....drop some vicsious nubs.
Also i wish i could rep his opponent frye for keeping a straight face in that first pic.
Again i don't mean to disrespect Maynard, but this whole thing is F'ed.

Ok, I will start with the part of me that thinks this is absolutely fucking retarded, and is making everyone look bad.
Now to the part of me that says good for Kyle for chasing his dreams and experiencing something 100% of the world doesn't want him to experience.
But still, this is fucked up to see. I hate to say this, but it almost looks like he's fighting a dog :(

I showed my friend who never watches MMA the vid and he said it looked like the guy was fighting a dog who couldnt bite. :o

I thought the exact same thing.
What I want to know is, what would've happened if Maynard had've actually gotten in on Fry's legs? What the hell happens next? How does he actually disrupt someone's balance enough to get a guy down?
(I realize he won a bunch of wrestling matches, but I see that more as him winning scrambles and ending up on top rather than actually getting takedowns.)
Also, I wish Gray Maynard was still a terrible striker, because I'd feel some serious jokes coming on comparing their striking ability.

That is amazing. I can't believe how cautious his opponent is either. Dude, it's a guy with no hands and no legs, and he's not allowed to strike!!
Seriously, how can you take a guy like that to a decision and continue to fight? I'm not saying you have to kill him, but rough him up enough that the ref stops it, and he doesn't ever want to get into the cage again. Now he's probably going to want to fight again.

He can definately scramble like a mf'er, I'll give him that.
I wonder now after watching this, what were his entire gym thinking when they were preparing for this fight? I mean, he agrees to fight therefore he must train. What type of training were they doing that gave them confidence for this fight?
