TMZ spoke with Randy's brother, Lanny Poffo, who tells us the wrestling legend suffered a heart attack while he was behind the wheel around 9:25 AM ... and lost control of his vehicle.

Earlier this month, Savage celebrated his 1-year anniversary with his new wife Lynn.

Savage was 58.

Macho Man began wrestling in the WWF in 1985 and became a superstar with his trademark catchphrase "Ooooooh Yeaahhhhh."

UPDATE: Florida Highway Patrol tells TMZ ... Savage was driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler when he veered across a concrete median ... through oncoming traffic ... and "collided head-on with a tree."

Savage was transported to Largo Medical center, where he died from his injuries.

Savage's wife was a passenger in the vehicle during the collision -- but survived with "minor injuries." She was transported to a different local hospital where she was treated.

According to officials, Randy and Lynn were both wearing their seatbelts at the time of the accident.

Cops say alcohol was NOT a factor.

An investigation into the accident is underway.

It happened right here in Tampa near where I live too.

Super sad he is one of my first memories of wrestling. When I first saw wrestling when I was 4 or 5 I just remember him, Hulk and the Ultimate Warrior all being awesome!

Yup, I think me and you are the same age (1983) but those are my first memories of wrestling.

A massive loss to the wrestling community. Dude was a pillar and an eternal legend. IMO the best champion of the old era.

And in a way, I'm glad he didn't die the normal, alcohol/drug/suicide way wrestlers do these days.

Oooohh YEaahh!

It's a real pitty. I wonder if the injuries or the heart are the true cause. The article quotes the authorities as saying the injuries, but I wonder if it was actually the heart. Maybe a message to the younger wrestlers- ditch the steroids and that junk. He was always entertaining to watch.

damn another wrestler taken too young, heart attack would indicate the abuse put on the body(steroids, painkillers etc)

Wow that is really sad news. When I was real young I was actually never a fan of Macho but as I got older I really came to respect and enjoy his ring work. Dude seriously cared a lot about putting on a show and doing things right in the ring.
