View Full Version : Brock Lesnar – “Kurt would definitely be a threat to my title”
Current UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar (3-1) was recently asked on ESPN radio, amongst various other topics – about how Kurt Angle would fare in mixed martial arts. The question stemmed from Angle’s previous comments, expressing interest in competing in mixed martial arts. Lesnar had the following to say;
"You know Kurt has all the tools to make the switch to MMA, and if he’s willing to put the time and effort in – I think he could reach the top of the ladder pretty easily and I hate to admit it but he would definitely be a threat to my title. I’ve said (it) before, he is a better wrestler than I am and that would come into play in MMA. Having stong wrestling ability in my opinon is the most important skill required for MMA and Kurt has that in abundance."
With his olympic wrestling background I could see him going far in MMA, I don’t see no reason why someone with his skills and athleticism can’t compete at the highest level like how I did.
Lesnar is currently set to defend his UFC title against interim champion, Frank Mir at UFC 100 on July 13th.

Provided that this interview is true, i really lost all respect for Lesnar (didn't have much left after that retarded reeling in of fish/lassoing vs HH). He doesn't seem respect MMA and years some guys have trained stand up techniques or BJJ.
And before anyone goes "LOL Q_F, wrestling is a good base!", know that Kurt Angle is 40 years old and has (what i know of) no striking or BJJ training. One discipline is not enough in today's MMA, just look at what happened to Kongo or Houston Alexander...

yeah, in his prime, he could have been the best ever....very fast, amazing wrestler (w/ amazing technique, not like Lesnar who relied so much on being a bully on the mat)...he would have been the best wrestler to ever compete in mma
now, not so much.

There's no question about that, has was an Olympic wrestler. But now? He would lose to almost anyone in the HW-division...

He is way to old now, what happens if he faces Mir who could slap a sub on in seconds... What if he can't get someone like Junior Dos Santos down?
he probably wouldn't lose to cheick kongo
I don't think so. Cain is a better striker than Angle, i'm 100 sure of that, and he almost got finished several times by Kongo in the total minute that fight lasted on the feet...

so? he bullrush's kongo and dives for a td...kongo's kicks/kness are slow and cain could have avoided those punches if he just dove in
cain just wanted to prove something...and then when he got rocked and smartened up

I say he gets kneed (Fujita vs Cro Cop I) when bullrushing...
If he doesn't, how good is his GnP? What do we know about it? My guess is that even a succesful TD would turn into LnP and they would get stood up. Angle would then get tooled...

How big is Angle anyway?

why would Lesnar say something like that? completely discredits the UFC HW champion belt saying that Angle would go well considering Angle's age..

He is apparently 240lbs according to wikipedia
Kurt has also broken his neck a few times. Hes to old and beat up to make the transition.

This has always been my take on Angle.
IF he had made the transition around the late 90's he could've been really good, at this point in his life he should stick to pro-wrestling.

Kurt Angle would have been an amazing mma fighter in his younger days, but probaly not so much now. Kurts wrestling background is huge, and say 5-7 years ago how far he could have went. Look at how far pretty much wrestling alone carried Hughes, or Tito with his wrestling and GNP.
But right now, no Kurt couldn't be that much of a threat. Too many injuries, and too old.
Man everyone is on Lesnars case all the time over saying one thing. The longer he is champ the better its going to be so everyone has to squirm under his reign with the undeserved title fight.

BTW....its not a discredit to the ufc, the heavyweight division, or the title by saying Kurt could far...it was completely based on his wrestling...his wrestling could go far cause it would be the best wrestling in the history of the UFC....how many olympic gold medal wrestlers are in the UFC?

I'd love to see Angke get destroyed in an MMA match, by any HW.

Man Lesnar vs Mir kills me because I can't figure out who annoys me more.
Every time both of them open their mouths they make me like them both less.

Randy is 45, Kurt's age isn't the problem it's his broken neck. Honestly I would believe Lesnars opinion on this above most because he's fought some talented HW's and he knows Angles skillset better than any of us. Not sure I see him being a threat though, maybe if he could cut down to LHW. Doesn't matter either way though, the UFC won't sign him because he won't quit pro-wrestling.

This isn't wrestling though, this is MMA. Angle may have the best wrestling on paper, but wrestling with strikes, judo throws, guys pulling guard, submissions, etc is a completely different beast.

If Angle could, he would. But he cannot, so he shall not.

Angle would struggle to get medical clearance to fight in an mma fight considering his repeated neck breaks / injuries. He is so beaten up one of his arms appears to have atrophied

It would have been nice to have seen Kurt make a run at MMA BACK 2-3 YEARS AGO WHEN he was initiailly talking about it. These days, I haven't heaard anything from him inj terms of MMA and then BRock brings this up. It's alright up to a point cause back in the daym, it would have been true but not soo much these days.
Watching Angle in MMA kinda interests me, to tell you the truth.

Agreed, that is one of the biggest things that annoys me when people break down fights. It seems like pretty much everyone thinks that if you have a better amatuer background you are the better wrestler which you could make the case right now the best wrestler in the UFC never wrestled in college or high school and that is GSP and the guy with the best TDD never wrestled either and that is BJ Penn.
