View Full Version : Paulo Thiago talks fight with Jon Fitch
After impressing the world with a first round knockout victory against Josh Koscheck, Paulo Thiago won’t have easy job in his second UFC fight. After signing the contract to face Jon Fitch at UFC 100, Paulo Thiago spoke with TATAME.com about his preparation for the fight, his training and his thoughts for the fight. “He has a solid Wrestling, knows how to fight standing, is good on takedowns and knows how to fight on the ground, but we’ll do a good job to annul it. It’ll be a chess fight again”, said Paulo, who also commented his professional situation, once that he’s an officer of Brasilia’s special police team (BOPE): “They’re happy with my and help me in everything”.

Heard Paulo is good on the ground but haven't seen him fight there yet. No reason for me to think he is going to beat Fitch, wasn't that impressed with him against Kos.

Yeah I really don't see a way Thiago takes this one. Standing, Fitch will be more careful than Koscheck was, and if Diego couldn't beat Fitch on the ground, then I don't think Thiago will be able to. Fitch UD.
Fitch will not only win but I think he will finish the fight.
"Finish the fight?!?!?!?!?!", you say?
"Yes, FINISH the fight" :D

Weird the article says "after impressing the world." I'm part of this world, and I was not impressed. Fitch takes this one.

Agree...I think Fitch will have more cautious gameplan while standing then Kos, and use his superior wreslting to dominate Thiago on the ground and finish it there...

Yeah same here. I'm thinking "after stunning the world" would be more appropriate.
Anyways assuming that his stand-up is as bad as he showed in that Kos fight before the two big shots. Then I see Fitch wrecking him. Fitch's stand-up isn't great, but he will mix it up much better then Kos did.
Fitch also has no problem throwing guys on their back and sticking to his strengths. Obviously i haven't seen much of Paulo's ground game, but i think it's a safe bet to say he won't catch Fitch.
Bottom line. I see Fitch putting on a show here, mixing it up and not allowing Paulo to get comfortable what so ever. I think Fitch gets the mid 2nd round stoppage after just dominating him for the first round and a half.

I'm taking Fitch, but I'm very interested in seeing what Paulo's ground game is like. He loves chokes and Fitch has been known to leave himself open to those in the past, probably not a good idea against an established BJJ black-belt that trains with Rani Yahya.

Fitch should take this easily mostly because he's a much better fighter then Thiago.
Better standing, better mma grappling, and better wrestling.

I agree but playing devils advocate Kos was supposed to walk right through him as well.
I agree though Fitch is the better fighter here, i think Fitch is a better fighter than Kos and will be able to win this fight via a UD. Thiago is said to be good on the ground i think he will spend most of the fight on his back and avoid anything that finishes him but be unsuccessful in subbing Fitch.

To be fair Koscheck didn't lose for any reason other then the guy went and decided he wanted more big time cool looking knockouts and kept throwing the same overhand right and Thiago nailed him with a nice punch after showing pretty below average stand up.

Agreed. I think Kos's standup is over rated to begin with, he throws that overhand right SO often any fighter should plan on that and plan to counter it. Fitch is a better striker IMO, he may not have the same power but he will pick Thiago apart and win on points or possibly get a TKO.

Fitch should take this one easily, I will be shocked if something like the koscheck fight happens here...
I was SHOCKED when he KO's koscheck though.

Thiago was getting owned in the fight with Koscheck, then koscheck threw a really really lazy jab.
Fitch will maul him

Can you believe this is on the undercard? I for one know I would rather see this fight than, Stephan Bonnar v. Mark Coleman. Damnit UFC, why do you have to be so cruel.
Oh, Fitch by domination.

Surviving GSP has made Fitch even more dangerous than he was before. He's more dangerous with the wolfman beard, though.

Couldn't agree more on Kos wanting to showoff with a highlight KO in the Thiago fight.
Fitch is difficult to tame, and the only way to beat him is to be stronger than him (ala GSP). I see Fitch just pounding on Paulo for 3 rounds, if he can survive that long.

I really just don't see that Kos was showing off, to me thats how his stand up always looks hence why i think its overrated. He just bombs that overhand right. I think he has good power but to me his tech still sucks.

I think Fitch will get a second title shot eventually.
