I didn't realize how shitty the UFC's BJJ level has gotten.
I really hope I forgot some people.

Rousimar Palhares. All these guys are mundials and adcc big dogs. How is it a bad level of jitz?

Dean Lister ... oh wait. :)

It's just that outside of the UFC I might not even have Vinny in the top 10 of MMA also Vinny never won black belt Mundials or ADCC.
I mean
1. Marcelo Garcia
2. Jacare Souza
3. Xande Ribeiro
4. Demian Maia
5. Fabricio Werdum
6. Robert Drysdale
7. Andre Galvao
8. Shinya Aoki
9. Ricardo Arona
10. Shaolin Ribeiro

I don't know much about BJJ as you do, but has Aoki even won any major competitions? You have him over Arona and I know that dude is a beast when it comes to BJJ.

I mean
1. Marcelo Garcia - Yet to prove himself in mma. He lost to a nobody.
2. Jacare Souza - Decent prospect, but he was picked up by dream before the UFC had a chance to see what he was made of.
3. Xande Ribeiro - Another decent prospect, but still lacks mma experience.
4. Demian Maia - In the UFC
5. Fabricio Werdum - Was in the UFC, got dropped for being pretty average.
6. Robert Drysdale - Has he even fought pro mma?
7. Andre Galvao - 2 wins over nobodies
8. Shinya Aoki - The UFC would love to pick him up but he's always had a contract with dreamstage since he's been good. Would he be as good without the pants?
9. Ricardo Arona - In no mans land. Rumours that he's going to sign for ufc.
10. Shaolin Ribeiro - Probably the only guy the ufc could and should have picked up out of this lot.
I can't think of many examples of fighters that the UFC have picked up without showing their worth in mma(except Brock Lesnar, but he is a huge draw for the American public. Most casual American fans don't give a hoot about how many black belts a Brazilian has tapped out, so the ufc won't sign them without knowing they are a legit mma threat). The ufc generally has a rule of bringing in fighters on a roll in smaller orgs and seeing how they cope on the big stage against the top guys, not brining in BJJ gods and hoping they can throw a punch.

It's probably the fact that Shinya has shown off some serious MMA grappling.

Yea I understand why they don't have some of the guys I listed and I'm sure money is why Arona, Ribeiro, Aoki, Werdum, Jacare aren't there yet.
I'm not trying to rag on the UFC I'm just saying the number of top notch BJJ guys isn't good.
Drysdale will probably be in the UFC after some fights and hopefully Xande and Galvao as well.
I'm just saying there is high level BJJ out there and it's not in the UFC which is sad.

If we are talking plain grappling then Aoki doesn't get on my top 50 grapplers in MMA but Aoki has looked so amazing lately against some good guys like JZ so he gets the bump up.
Plus I hate Arona.
Only thing I remeber finding on Vinny was him winning:
Super Heavy, 1st Vinicius Magalhaes, Black Belt adult male for the World No-Gi Championship
MIR.....:)
Ugly people aren't allowed a top 5 list, sorry Steph.
I guess Maia, Almeida and Penn would be my top 3 at the moment, but I don't see how you're placing Gonzaga above Bj penn?

Good list, i agree the UFC doesn't have the strongest BJJ fighters, but some just haven't faired will in MMA. Dean Lister is a great example of someone with great jitz that just can't seem to get it to transition to MMA. Thankfully Maia has had no problem so he can show the casual fans how exciting BJJ can be and hopefully the UFC will make an effort to sign more top BJJ guys :)

I agree with this. Although some guys like Aoki/Maia have master the art of clinging on to dudes to get their jitz on, too many BJJ wouldn't fair so well in top level MMA because of their extreme lack of striking.
Although it is fair to point out certain key members missing from the UFC roster that shouldn't be, such as Arona and Werdum.

Haha.
Well since bbjd's original post had vinny and what not, it seems like he's listing the top 5 BJJ guys, not MMA adapted BJJ guys. In that case, Nog won't be too high up.

hmm I guess. But would still put him over Gabe just based on what I've seen.

Nog's MMA-BJJ is definitely better than Gabe's he's dangerous from all positions, not just the top like Napao.

It's just funny because Nogueira is the complete opposite to Dean Lister. He doesn't have the grappling credentials per se, but he has much better application of BJJ in MMA than Lister has EVER shown. :D

I will give you an even better example then Nog. Dustin Hazelett, the dude is just an MMA BJJ BEAST, and pretty sure he has even less credentials then Nog

No-Gi Mundials aren't really a big deal yet.
The best in the world don't compete in it at this point.

Yeah, this is what is confusing me.
You have Vinny listed as #2 so I thought you meant pure BJJ (he's won world titles I think) but now you have it as MMA grappling so why is he so high? I also think BJ's MMA grappling > Gonzaga's.
He does not get credit for submitting some TUFers and his record is garbage. If it's about slick subs, I would have Hazelett over him.

Hazelet is inventive but he'd get smoked by any thoroughbred grapplers. Gonzaga has way better grappling credntials than Nog. He won the mundials and (I think) his class in ADCC. If it wasn't for Garcia he'd probably have won the openweight too. Nog is a way better mma fighter but Gabe has really good jitz. Although Werdum has better jitz and better striking and cardio than Gonzaga, so I'm not really sure why he got dropped. Probably because Gonzaga is prepaired to bang with anyone(to his downfall), whereas Werdum is pretty boring.

Yea It's kinda a hybrid combo. I mean Lister isn't making my list but it's not a pure MMA BJJ list. It's kinda a who would you least like to go to the ground list.
Vinny is not a guy I buy into that much but then again BJ, Gonzaga, and Almedia aren't that dangerous on the ground and I think Vinny in MMA is far more dangerous on the ground then any of them.
Hazelett is a great MMA grappler but even in MMA he doesn't have this level of ground game.
Gonzaga has a great top game so does BJ but BJ doesn't work his bottom game at all which is why I put Gonzaga over him.
1. Maia
2. Big Nog
3. Palhares
4. Marquardt
5. Almeida
The UFC is obviously lacking high level grapplers at the moment but hopefully we can see Drysdale work his way up to he can tap some faggy wrestlers out.
