View Full Version : Which LHW has the best chance against Lyoto?

I've been wondering this myself. If I had to choose, I'd probably go with someone who could take him down ....standing I think people are going more often than not....could Ryan "The Master" Bader be the man to do it?
I don't see anyone in the UFC beating him right now TBH. There are a few who'll give him a good fight but I see them all coming up short really.
Outside of the UFC I'd say Arona's probably got the best chance to beat him.
Why isn't Arona in the UFC? I was never a fan but UFC rules are freakin tailor made for his style.

I think Rashad and Rampage can match up with him because of their counter-boxing and hand speed. Besides them I am not sure right now.
Also Ryan Bader seriously?

Bader will be a beast in a few years. Size and Wrestling in the wannabe K-1 the LHW has turned into is a fantastic combo.
I think Rashad will beat him I think Rampage would as well.
I'm really curious to see how he does against a guy who is a striker.
Not facing a brawler/ground fighter, a somewhat wellrounded wrestler, or an explosive judoka.
But a guy who's focus is keeping fights standing.

I'd say Tito, Franklin, Sokky, T. Silva, and Rashad would all crush that wimp Lyoto.
Honestly I think Rashad has the best chance which is why I am very much looking forward to this fight. I still think my man Machida will win but Rashad has some great tools.
With his newfound stand-up skills, KO power, wrestling pedigree, and master gameplanner in Jackson he has more tools than anyone else against Machida imo

To be fair though, Chuck and Forrest were not hard guys to gameplan for.
Chuck keeps his hands low and gets frustrated and moves forward when you don't engage. On top of that Chuck was winning before he got clocked IMO.
Forrest has pillows for hands and will more than likely try to outscore you with leg kicks standing up. He also has a somewhat questionable chin. At least Jardine would say so.
I don't expect great gameplanning to win this fight for Rashad.
Machida has shown no frustration yet and straight up clowned everyone he has fought in the UFC.
All Rashad can do is catch Machida in an exchange IMO.

i think rashad and rampage will have a good chance at beating lyoto. they'll have to mix up their takedowns with their striking. bader could have a chance but rashad's and rampage's striking is a lot better than his, and machida would have to worry about both their strikes and takedowns. machida would be expecting the takedown from bader but he would have to defend both takedowns and striking from rashad and rampage

By gameplanning though I actually just mean Rashad can stick to his plan regardless of what is happening in the fight which was shown in the Liddell bout since he was losing the first round.
I think the gameplan will be to mix it up and see how the stand-up goes but definitely use his wrestling and GnP if possible.
Now I am not saying he will win, because I think Machida will take this, but I think he stands the best chance of anyone currently in the LHW division.

I have a better understanding now and completely agree.

Rashad is going to be a real tough matchup with his speed and striking....but I think Rampage will not only put up the best chance against Machida, but beat Machida if he happens to take the belt from Rashad.

Anderson Silva, Franklin, Rashad and Rampage. Forrest maybe, but I don't think so, he's to slow. Hell BJ took him to a decision, so maybe GSP.... I also think Vera would be an interesting match up with his length and pure striking, could be a different kind of fight for Machida.

I would love to see Machida/Rampage but I just think he is too slow. Machida would be able to keep the distance and pick him apart until he is ready to go down. However Page does have more power and in tighter spots than Rashad so if he were to get inside with Machida I would be worried

Rashad has the best chance to beat Machida.
It'll be interesting to see if he does.

Defeinetally Rampage IMO cause stylistically, it may even fit rampage. While im a nuthugger of Machida i still realised that when Jackson is the aggressor he is much better then when he fights on the backfoot. Machida gives that to him, but Machida could chop him down with leg kicks

machida could also trip him and submit him

Hmmm, I gotta agree with CPL here in that Vera would be very interesting. The super long reach could potentially pose a problem for Machida.
Other than that, I really don't see too many that would pose any significant trouble for Machida. Rashad will be interesting, but at best Machida still has a decent advantage.

Hmm what if he were to fight Couture? Would be interesting to see if Randy could shove him against the cage for some dirty boxing. Randy is getting a little old though.
Rich Franklin again? Not sure it would be any different than the first time though.

Machida's BJJ is a tad sloppy and Jackson hasn't been submitted since 2001. I don't think so, but Machida could control him on the ground though

Lol at Vera being your choice, have you seen what Machida does to guys who throw leg kicks? I could show you a lot of GIF's to show you, but in short, they get a straight left to the chin

Stylisticly, no one in MMA matches up well against Machida. We've yet to see him get in trouble standing or anybody control him on the ground. ATM Rashad probably poses the biggest threat because he is a well rounded fighter with KO power. I still don't see him beating Lyoto other than landing a flash KO.

When I watch Machida's fights the biggest problem his opponent's have is with his quickness. I don't think it is because he is unorthodox (although he is), he is very quick and he always seems to beat them to the punch. Based on that I think Evans actually has the best chance because he is the quickest LHW I can think of.
Man I just don't see Rashad beating him, just because he has fast hands but that's about all I see. I don't see Machida losing a single round to Evans.

I think Rashad has the best shot. The only guy who is just as quick and athletic and can probably get him down if he needs to. I still think Machida beats Rashad.

You don't think Vera could gameplan for something like that? With Machida's style, someone with a significantly long reach could really hinder him. Do I think Vera could/would beat Machida? Hell no. But I could see him giving Machida some trouble along the way.

I was trying to come up with a really smart answer to this question that nobody had thought of yet, but it just didn't happen. I think of the guys in the UFC, Rashad stands the best chance because of his movement and hand speed, and one punch KO power.
I don't think Rampage has the speed to catch Lyoto and put him out, and he definitely wouldn't win a decision against him.
Outside of the UFC, I actually think Rogerio Nogueira might give him a good fight. He has a solid chin, good technical striking and a ground game that is probably better than Machida's. The issue again is speed, and Lil Nog just wouldn't be fast enough.

Who said you were the only one that hates Machida? Why does someone always have to bring up that they hate Machida in any thread about him?
The thread is about who you think could actually beat him, not who you hope beats him because you don't like him.
Definitely Rashad. A speedy and patient striker who isnt going to walk Machida down and you always have to fear his take downs.
Rashad isnt going to get like Tito and get so frustrated he loses his strategy and walks right into Machida's traps. Hell seriously dance around for 5 rounds if he has to because dude realizes the W is everything and you can always erase a bad performance by smashing the next dude you face.
I gotta go with the majority and say Rashad. I think he can win, or at the very least, put him unfamiliar territory (ie. punched in the face). Obviously Machida is a calm fighter, so it'll be interesting to see how he would do recovery wise, but if you give Rashad a chance, I'm thinking he'll make the most of it.

I think Rashad will pose problems for Lyoto but he'll overcome them to win the UD. Rampage power would definately cause Machida concern but Machida would pick him apart. Couture is actually a good shout imo. He has the potential to close the distance and use his dirty boxing and wrestling skills to control where the fight goes hypothetically. That would be a very interesting fight.
