I've been over at BoxingScene hearing these elitists yap on about weight training is bad for you, makes you slow, robs you of your agility, stamina, cardio etc.
Then when I provide several sources to show them they are wrong they point to me being an MMA Fan. According to them MMA fighters lift weights because they like to be big, all MMA fighters have shit stamina, are slow, and would be outworked by the likes of Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather.
I personally think it's ridiculous. Lifting weights in certain cases (bodybuilding) will obviously not help. But a weight training program that people like Sherk or St. Pierre undergo clearly don't make you slow.
Anyway. I just want to know what you think.

I said false.
Not all weight-lifting is the same, so using it as an umbrella term to make generalizations is ill-founded.

i voted false , yes certain types of lifting can cause those things but only if you really havent got an effin clue what your doing , since i started using weights as part of my conditioning in training i have felt the benefits immensely.

lol when the discussion turns to whose better mma fighters or boxers, it's probably a good time to stop discussing on BoxingScene.
Boxing and MMA are two different sports, and require two different types of strength. Boxing relies mostly on fast twitch, explosion based strength, whereas MMA their is alot of pulling, pushing, jocking for clinch position that requires like horsepower strength.

True, if you lift without stretching... which no athlete would ever do.

The poll is way too black and white for the subject. Sometimes it's true, sometimes it's not. It totally depends on the type of lifting you do and if you do any other exercises other than just lifting weights.
I voted false but like people have already said, it depends if you do it right.
There's loads of boxers that lift weights and you can do it without it slowing you down.
Lifting weights can't do any of those things.
Gaining large amounts of muscle will have a negative impact on your stamina and stamina. Gaining ridiculously large amounts of muscle(the type bodybuilders aspire to) may make you less flexible.
This reminds me of idiots who know nothing about training talking about how they don't want to get "too big" like they are gonna go to the gym one day, drink a shake after and wake up looking like Ronnie.

yep, people are retarded. i've had at least 5 people tell me the exact same thing. "well i don't want to get too big you know, that's just gross, like those guys in the magazines and shit"....meanwhile, they can hardly bench 135lbs.

I don't know how people can say it's true at all.
Usain Bolt does Squats with Heavy Weight, and he's anything but slow.
Another one I love is the idea people get that they are training fast twitch muscles by moving quickly and slow titch fibers by moving slowly.
How can people get basic physiology so, so very wrong????

This. Lifting heavy weights engages all muscle fibers and builds fast twitch muscles fibers as well.
