UFC UFN 18: Condit v Kampmann takes place Wed, April 1st, 2009 from the Sommet Center in Nashville, TN. Broadcast free on Spike TV and stay tuned afterward for the premier of TUF U.S.A VS. U.K.
Untelevised Undercard
Steve ‘the Hooligan’ Steinbeiss 4-2 v Ryan Jensen 13-4 – The Hooligan is an ACS product and part of the absorption of WEC fighters into the UFC. He has 3 KO wins with one sub win and two decision losses. The latest, a close split decision loss to Marrero in which it looked as if he ran out of time. He is a native of England, hence the Hooligan nickname, and is a very strong kick boxer with an undefeated kickboxing record. He also has K-1, WCL, and BODOG fight experience. Jensen made his pro debut against Fulton in 1997 after he started training MMA with Jennum, since then he has gone on to defeat various journeymen fighters as well as Kimmons and Curtis Stout. He has losses to Larson and Villasenor. In his 3 UFC fights he faced Brazilian standouts, Leites, Maia, and Gouveia, with all 3 being sub losses. While the Hooligan certainly has the chops to make this an exciting stand up fight and is the younger and bigger fighter, Jensen knows that the key to winning this is to get it to the ground quickly and control Steve, much like Marrero did. Jensen will use a far more polished and experienced ground game to ruin the Hooligan’s debut.
Tim ‘Wrecking Machine’ McKenzie 12-5 v Aaron ‘A-Train’ Simpson 4-0 – McKenzie holds wins over Mahood and Marshall and is also one of the many talents, as is his opponent, brought over to the UFC as a result of the dissolution of the WEC’s 205-185-170 divisions. Losses for McKenzie have come to the hands of Gono, Scott Smith, Sonnen and Cantwell. Tim will be fighting this fight at 185, as he has jumped around between that and 205. He rocks a very nice mohawk and he now trains with Fairtex/UTC and formerly trained with Simpson’s current team at ACS. A-Train made an impressive debut in the WEC with a highlight-reel, 18 second KO of David Avellan.

He is a 2-time All-American wrestler, and former PAC-10 Outstanding Wrestler of the Year out of ASU where he also was the assistant coach to Velasquez, Bader, and C.B.. He was also a USA National Wrestling team member and an ASU graduate from the Walter Kronkite School of Journalism. He and his wife were on season 2 of American Gladiators; where Aaron was the first person ever to score ten points on the pyramid but lasted only 3 seconds on joust with Nitro. His mother-in-law gave birth to the couple’s twins shortly after. While McKenzie is no Nitro, he does have superior striking skills should Aaron loiter too long before shooting for a takedown. While McKenzie does train with high caliber wrestlers like Mark Munoz, he won’t be able stop Simpson’s takedowns and will have a very difficult time getting out from under Simpson’s GNP.
Rob ‘the Rosedale Reaper’ Kimmons 21-4 v Joe ‘the Doctor’ Vedepo 7-2 – Kimmons is an Xtreme Couture fighter with most of his wins coming in small, regional shows over lesser skilled opponents. He has losses coming to Eastman, Diesel Riggs, Jensen, and most recently to Dan Miller. He holds the experience edge, has fought tougher competition, and has UFC experience with his win over Yundt as a replacement for Sakara. He has mostly sub wins and decent striking. The Doctor had his UFC debut against Sakara, but was manhandled in that loss as he suffered a first round head kick KO.

Vedepo is a strong wrestler with an unfortunate background. Had he not had so many problems throughout high school, chances are he would have been recruited to wrestle for a D-1 college. He is a very athletic wrestler with good control and hip positioning. The Doctor turned down an opportunity to be on TUF 8, confident that he would one day get an invite to fight for the UFC. Kimmons experience and skills match up favorably against Vedepo, with a further, well-rounded ground game and shown striking against quality opponents, Kimmons will likely control the pace of the fight en route to a decision win.
Jorge ‘El Conquistador’ Rivera 15-6 v Nissen Osterneck 5-1 – Rivera is a Team Sityodtong fighter. He has impressive wins over Lutter, Loiseau, Weir, Hallman, Dewees, and a brain rattling KO of Grove.

He has also had his shots at some of the best in the world. He has suffered losses to Hinkle, the infamous Murray, Franklin, Anderson Silva, Leben, a 14 second KO to Martin, and most recently a loss to tonight’s main event fighter, Kampmann. Rivera was also a member of TUF4, where he lost a 2-round decision to Cote. Rivera is a much loved and embraced member of the fighting community, which was made evident at the untimely passing of his eldest daughter in August of 2008. The outpourings of sympathy and well wishes were a welcome crutch for him and his family during very distressing times. With such a back-story and so much experience to contend with, it will be a tough task for Osterneck, making his UFC debut against a fan favorite. Osterneck is a skilled BJJ brown belt under Relson Gracie and looked good in his last fight, a loss against top prospect Rosholt. In that fight Nissen was able to dominate by landing effective strikes, but was unable to finish Rosholt and showed to be unprepared for a long fight as he ran out of gas and suffered a 2nd round TKO. While Nissen has no doubt focused on working on his cardio for this fight, Rivera has always shown to be a good all-around fighter and even though his age is showing, it hasn’t stopped him from performing at high levels. I think Rivera comes into this fight riding a wave of emotion and puts on an inspiring performance for a 2nd round sub victory.
