UFC Fight Night 18: Condit v Kampmann takes place Wednesday, April 1st, 2009 from the Sommet Center in Nashville, Tennessee. Broadcast free on Spike TV and stay tuned afterward for the premier of The Ultimate Fighter U.S.A VS. U.K.

Spike Televised Card
Tyson Lee Griffin 12-2 v Rafael Dos Anjos 11-3 – Tyson, until recently, was the only man to beat Urijah Faber. He also has wins over Bang Ludwig, Clay Guida, Thiago Tavares, Gleison Tibau, and his last win over Marcus Aurelio. He is a very exciting fighter to watch and collected 3 Fight of the Night bonuses in 3 consecutive fights in ’07. He has decision losses to Frankie Edgar and his last bout to Sean Sherk, in another FON performance. He is an Xtreme Couture fighter and is a strong wrestler with good hips and top control. He has a very powerful lower body with massive legs and Joe Rogan’s favorite badonkadonk. He opened his career going 8-0, venturing out of the 1st round only in his victory against Faber. Since than, he has gone 4-2 with all 6 fights going the full 15 minutes. You gotta love a fighter who committed himself to MMA in the hospital, getting stitches after his first training session with David Terrell. Dos Anjos is a Gracie Fusion fighter with a BJJ black belt under Roberto Gordo. He is the Fury FC LW champ and has mostly fought in regional shows in Brazil, before traveling to Japan for Pancrase fight. After an impressive performance in Japan, he returned to Brazil to successfully defend his title. The UFC took notice and signed him to fight Jeremy Stephens, where he looked very good for the first two rounds of the fight, working hard for submissions, takedowns, and position. Stephens had a different plan than going to the decision, however, and spoiled Dos Anjos’ debut with one of the most brutal uppercuts seen to date.

while Dos Anjos showed strong flashes of talent in that fight, he will have a tough time getting Tyson to the ground, as his takedowns don’t appear to be very good, and Griffin has a good sprawl. While Griffin may not have the power to put Dos Anjos on the express train to concussion city, he has a well-developed striking game, honed by countless hours in the gym with top talents at Xtreme Couture. It’s always possible that we could see a Koscheck-Thiago sized upset, but my bet will be that Griffin will dominate the standup by using good striking from different angles and control on the ground for a lopsided decision win to set himself up for another run at the top contender spot.

Jeremiah Cole ‘Mangrinho’ Miller 13-3 v Junie Allen ‘the Lunatik’ Browning 3-0 – Cole was a member of TUF5, where he defeated Berube and was defeated, after an illegal blow, by Joe Lauzon. He trains with American Top Team and has good BJJ, earning a brown belt under Ricardo Liborio. He also has good boxing skills and a long reach, holding wins over Chris Mickle, the Legend – Andy Wang, Leonard Garcia, and the most recent feather in his cap is a submission of the night winning triangle win over BJJ black belt, Jorge Gurgel.

He has losses to Shooto champion, Takeshi Inoue, and Jeremy Stephens. The Lunatik was the latest polarizing cast member of TUF8. While his antics on the show earned him lots of attention, both good and bad, it distracted from his actual skills. While on the show, he soundly beat Jose Aguilar to earn his way into the house and eventually challenged just about everybody’s patience. He scored a win in a decision victory over Rolli Delgado, but did not impress anybody, as he did not demonstrate any extraordinary skill set as he had hyped himself to have. He was nearly driven to flipping burgers after a discouraging loss to eventual winner, Efrain Escudero, but had a change of heart and traveled to Vegas to join the Xtreme Couture team. Junie earned a FON, arm bar victory over castmate Dave ‘Tenderness’ Kaplan in his UFC debut, showing much improved striking, footwork and composure.

While Junie is a BJJ purple belt, we really haven’t seen too much of it in use to call it a strength. Junie has also been very critical of Miller’s BJJ, saying that it doesn’t transition well to MMA and is overrated. While we have seen that Browning does project a strong self-confidence, his behaviors on the show and in interviews have shown that he is mentally weak and, thus far, has been easy to wear down. I believe this will be the case in this bout; Miller will use his reach and size advantage to negate Junie’s striking and footwork and will neutralize him on the ground as well. Miller controls this fight and wins a decision over a frustrated and discouraged Browning.

Ryan DuWayne ‘Darth’ Bader 8-0 v Carmelo ‘the Fury’ Marrero 10-2-1 – Bader, an ACS product, was a wrestling standout at ASU alongside Dolloway and Velasquez. He is a 3-time PAC-10 champ and 2-time D-1 All-American. He started fighting in 2007, winning all 6 of his fights before running off a quick win in 08 and joining the cast of TUF8. While on the show, Master Bader using a big right hand to vanquish Tom Lawlor and his strength and wrestling to defeat Elliot Marshall as the first pick of Team Nogueira. In the finale, he dispatched of BJJ stud, Vinicious Magalhaes in just over 2 minutes to seal up the contract with a big right hand.

Bader is a very strong prospect in the LHW division and training with a very good camp, he will no doubt come prepared and seems to be a very composed fighter. Marrero is also a good wrestler; he wrestled as a heavyweight at Rider University and showed excellent wrestling skills in his claim-to-fame to date, defeating Kongo. Other notable wins come over Sherman Pendergarst, and a recent split decision win over Steve Steinbeiss. After upsetting Kongo, he faced off against Gonzaga in an elimination fight with the winner to face Cro-Cop and was promptly taken apart by Gonzaga. Following that loss Marrero dropped to LHW and faced Gouveia, who also submitted him and led to his release from the UFC. He has not lost since his release with a NC coming against Mike Ciesnolevics. Unfortunately for Marrero, his return is against somebody with a similar skill set, with superior skills. Bader is a far more accomplished wrestler and will probably win this fight with better striking. I see Bader wearing down Marrero with effective striking and a frustrated and tired Marrero shooting for a stuffed takedown, landing Bader on top for the TKO stoppage.

Carlos ‘Natural Born Killer’ Condit 23-4 v Martin ‘the Hitman’ Kampmann Frederikson 18-3 –Condit, the son of New Mexico Chief of Staff, Brain Condit, is the former WEC WW champion and is currently riding an 8-fight win streak. He also holds the King of Pancrase title and is a veteran of Rumble on the Rock. He has notable wins over Carlo Prater, Brock Larson, John Alessio, Frank Trigg, and Renato ‘Charuto’ Verissimo. His only notable losses are on early in his career to Carlo Prater (which he avenged), a decision loss in a tournament to Jake Shields the same night he fought Trigg, and losses to Pat Healy and Satoru Kitoaka. He has switched camps to train with the guys at Arizona Combat Sports and should have improved his wrestling significantly. Condit uses good leg kicks and jabs to set up takedowns and works very well on the ground, having submitted the majority of his challengers. After a stint in the 185lb division, Martin Kampmann decided to drop 15lbs after Nate Marquardt dwarfed him in his last fight at 185. Martin was on a 9-fight win streak and on his way to top contender status before Marquardt knocked him silly. He holds wins against Jorge Rivera and Drew McFedries,

as well as the next challenger to Anderson Silva’s belt, Thales Leites. Martin has been training with Xtreme Couture and has an excellent Muay Thai background. He was very impressive in his last fight, his first at WW, against Alexandre Barros. Kampmann has an underrated ground game and a lot of power with the ability to stop a fight with one good shot. He has the striking advantage against Condit, and also a slight reach advantage as well. I think Martin will settle in to the first round by using his striking and reach to keep off the ground, but after a feeling out process, Condit should take him down in the second and landing effective ground and pound, causing Kampmann to scramble and be caught in a submission as the Natural Born Killer makes a splash in the UFC’s highly competitive 170lb division.

More nice stuff. I like your style because we have like 9 of 10 picks being the same on the card.

I think Tyson might have the power to finish Dos Anjos though. He was really tagging Tibau in their fight, and I think if he catches Dos Anjos with some of those same shots (which he'll do, and then some) it'll be nighty night for Rafael.

I think Junie will get frustrated when Cole's BJJ isn't as shitty as he thinks it is, and he'll do something stupid to get submitted.

Bader I see winning by TKO like you said.

I have Condit winning by Split Decision, not sub, because to me that fight is just so close to call, and both guys are pretty tough to finish.
