As the main event for UFC Fight Night 18 on Wednesday night, final WEC welterweight champion Carlos Condit has the opportunity to establish himself as a true contender in one of the UFC's deepest weight classes.
His opponent, Martin Kampmann isn't without incentive either. He recently made the drop from the 185-pound middleweight class down to 170 pounds. A win over Condit to follow up his welterweight debut victory over Alexandre Barros, would put him in the same seat... that being a contender to the throne currently occupied by Georges St. Pierre.
The two weighed in on Tuesday in Nashville, Tenn., without a hitch. They top a 12-bout fight card as the Ultimate Fighting Championship makes its debut in the "Volunteer State."
Though most of the athletes had little trouble making weight, both Jeremy Stephens, at 158 pounds, and Gleison Tibau, at 156.5 pounds, came in slightly over for their 155-pound lightweight bout. The UFC later confirmed that the two agreed to a catchweight bout of 158 pounds.
Most notably, Steven Steinbeiss and Ryan Jensen did not weigh in for their middleweight fight along with the other fighters, but did hit the scales about 15 or 20 minutes after the weigh-in was presumably over. Their weights were not announced.
In an updated posted on UFC.com, the promotion noted that both fighters weighed in at 186 pounds, but that their bout is currently on hold, "pending resolution of an administrative issue."
Although that issue was not divulged by the promotion, MMAWeekly.com sources indicate that there was some sort of issue with Jensen being cleared by the athletic commission.
Stay tuned to MMAWeekly.com for further details as events unfold.

I can't find pictures but I would like too. I wish I could see how these guys looked.
I'm curious as to why Jeremy didn't make weight. That isn't good.

Not shocked at Gleison coming in a bit over. Had Stephens made weight I'm sure he could've got down to 156 though.
If Stephens isn't in good shape for this fight, he's going to get murdered (more so).
Does anyone else not like the 1lb allowance? I think it's kind of dumb, since guys have to make the actual weight if they ever fight in a title fight. We see almost every fighter coming in over the actual limit for their weight class now (17 of the 22 guys on this card were over but still "made weight"). I know it doesn't make a huge difference, but I like the principle of actually having to make weight.

Cali supposedly just got rid of the 1lb allowance and yea it makes no sense if the fights at 170 why are they weighing in at 171.
Gleison supposedly weighed in with his shorts on which is why he didn't make 156.

can't really blame gleison....he probably could have easily cut the 1/2 lb off....he also took the fight on quite short notice
no excuse for jeremy tho....i saw a video interview w/ him not too long ago where he said it was really nice to have a full training camp....yet he comes in 3lbs heavy? that's bad.
Wow Tibau coming in a little over doesnt surprise me but Jeremy missing weight by that much shows a lack of focus and discipline which doesnt bode well when youre fighting a beast like Gleison.

This looks like a situation where the UFC knew ahead of time since Tibau didn't even strip down to cut the .5 he needed to.
I'm disappointed in Stephens missing weight not in Tibau though this doesn't look like he actually missed weight it looks like he was told the fight was going to be moved to 158.

Yeah, this makes me think Jeremy was probably injured late in his training camp and let the UFC know but they decided to let the fight go on. Either way doesnt bode well for Stephens.

Good to know about Cali, and I have no doubt that Gleison easily would've made weight had he needed to. When are people going to stop saying "if Gleison can manage to make weight"? It's not like he's Thiago Alves or... some other guy who never makes weight.

It's disappointing to see Stephens miss weight, but I also think Tibau would have probably been able to make weight. He was probably told Stephens wouldn't make it.
As for the 1lb over rule, I think it's fair because scales are not universally accurate. They may weigh themselves on two different scales one after the other and might be even more than 1lb apart really.

I don't count the time with the diuretic as making weight. Maybe that's unreasonable of me, but using a banned substance to help yourself make weight doesn't count as making weight in my books.
I was going to put a disclaimer on that statement too, but debates are more fun.

i just think blaming him for the Hughes fight is stupid....he took the fight on short notice and was injured....the UFC was well aware of what was happening, and that's why they didn't give a shit.

I think Alves catches a lot of heat for missing weight because of how much weight he cuts. Right or wrong, I think that is why he gets no sympathy (that and the illegal diuretic). A lot of people think he's gaming the system, regardless if everyone can cut weight because it's legal. I don't want to derail this into another one of those "should fighters be allowed to cut weight" threads.

I still don't understand why people use diuretics, since it makes you feel like shit, cramps, headaches the runs etc.. I'd rather hit the sauna or do some mad cardio than take that again.
Edit-the Jensen vs Stenbeiss fight is off because of Adderall found on Jensen's system.

Been awhile since I have seen any weight issues at a ufc event weigh in.
I wonder what happened to Stephens that he was that far over. Some kind of injury or was he just lazy? I doubt he was lazy as he hasnt had issue in the past. Guess it makes me feel better about having money on Gleison though

While not acceptible I would think that Stephens was probably trying to come in as big as possible against Tibau. If he then got injured late in the training camp he may have found it difficult to get rid of the rest of the weight.
This is of course merely conjecture but just trying to think of a reason for Stephens missing by so much.
