To the original question: Yes.

However, the guy who thinks that mixed martial artists outnumber boxers is absolutely insane. I'd venture to say that boxers outnumber MMArtists at least 10 to 1.

You can't compare the direct numbers to determine which sport is more dangerous, you'd have to look at a more proportional statistic, and I think if you did that, the sports would come out similar in level of danger. Boxing would still obviously have the edge in deaths, since there have been 3 in about 10 years in MMA, but it wouldn't be as drastic as it's made out to be in the video.

Every sport has dangers associated with it, and the participants know the risks going in. As long as it's regulated properly I don't think there's a whole lot more you can control while keeping the spirit of the sport.

Long term injuries in contact and combat sports always out weight the short term injuries. MMA is still to young to really determine just what effect it will have on the fighters who do it for say 20 years like some boxers.

I wouldnt be surprised if we see guys like Wandy who have had a long and brutal career end up like a lot of the old punch drunk boxers we see these days.

i just have to say this

wtf is with bull riding? it's really fun to watch, and it's probably really exhilirating to do....but why the hell are they not forced to wear helmets? you can if you want, but you don't have to. that has got to be the most outrageous lack of regulation in N.A in the 21st century....and why the hell do they not cut all the bulls horns off? that is another COMPLETELY unnecessary risk to take

it's just something that's been bothering me for a long time

Well theirs stuff like this in a lot of sports.

Hockey for example didnt always require helmets and now these days theirs a debate about wearing visors or face masks. Crosby is called out on wearing a visor all the time. Ive seen games though where cats have had slap shots going right into their grill but a visor has saved them from any serious injury.

Its always the kind of old school fans who want to keep the so called "purity" of the sport. Bull Riding for example people want to see the riders conquer the bull but at the same time love to see a dude get roughed up. I think its just that inherit blood lust that a lot of human beings have.

Most sports seem insane if you were to look at them from a neutral or medical position.
Look at football, its like what the hell are you doing? You are hitting a guy, full force.
MMA, you are fighting another person.
Bull Riding as stated above, you are riding a 2000 pound bull.....with horns that would rip you apart.

As for regulation, to me it doesn't matter. I don't think sport rules should be regulated by the government anyway, if someone doesn't want to wear a visor, so be it. That is their personal decision. Now, if the sport/league, say the NHL. Wants to force all players to wear a visor. Then that is perfectly fine. It should ultimately be left up to the organization/player(s).

As to if MMA is dangerous. Of Course it is, any sport that has physical contact has the potential to be dangerous. Hell, I know 2 or 3 people with Tennis Elbow.

Yeah as with any contact sport MMA is dangerous but I think with it regulated and understood the way it is now its not nearly as dangerous as many other sports.
