View Full Version : How do you feel FLD's articles/interviews compare to other MMA media outlet's?

I think it's an interesting question.

I was thinking about this today at work and trying to be objective about it, which is hard seeing as I know everybody who writes here and am a regular contributor myself.

It's a bit of a weird comparison to make in all honesty, as most media outlets are usually either breaking news or reporting fight results which we don't do here, but in terms of analytic pieces or historical articles I think we stack up pretty well. Obviously none of us are professional journalists/writers, but I think as fans of the sport our perspective holds a lot more validity than journalists whose main interest lies elsewhere and just kind of fell into MMA.

I think when comparing us to a lot of other places where fans simply air their feelings, there's no real comparison as our output seems a lot more professional, in large part due to Miles' approach to editing the articles in all fairness.

What I'm really interested in, is hearing your opinions of how this place stacks up to professional MMA media outlets, as I'm not sure if my opinion will differ from the norm around here.

Be honest, as criticism is more than welcome (from my perspective) seeing as it will only help us improve in the long run.

While you're at it, you may as well throw in any suggestions of things that other places do that you'd like to see here actually.

But yeah, compared to other MMA media outlets, both "fan's blogs" type places and more professional coverage, how you do think we stack up?

We should have video interviews :p

Really though. Some people are just too lazy to read. Sometimes when people post articles on other forums, sometimes I have no energy to read them, especially if they are long.

We should find a way to get a few video or at least audio interviews with fighters. I think that might draw more attention to the site.

But otherwise our articles are very well written.

To be honest with you, I can't remember a article I didnt enjoy reading. I hate reading so long stories yet I enjoy reading what you guys write about. I wouldnt really care about you writing news or pbp, but when you come up with your own original topic I think you do great. I don't know how you do compared to other MMA Journalists/writers as I dont read much from them.

Bring back the sloppy slugfest series!

haha, i was thinking about this last night. Brad's prob pretty busy with all of the shit he does, but i still want to see some slugfests and i would like them extra sloppy.

Anyways i have always enjoyed the articles here. And although i don't read a ton elsewhere. What i have read, i think this site stacks up very well against.

Obviously like Jack said the site can't really compete with the late breaking news, as we don't have those capabilities, yet. However as far as insight into MMA, and interesting articles go i would put the articles written here against any other site. The site also comes up with some pretty stellar interviews. And the fact that forum members get a chance to add questions is quite cool and something that helps set this site apart.

It would be a nice added feature if video and or audio copies were available for some of the interviews though, like SP said.

Everyone does a great job on the writing and interview aspect, except Brad he just sucks.

But I'm selfish and would like to see some boxing coverage. Looking at mmajunkie they even had an article up about Pac/Clottey. But yeah that's the selfishness.

For the people saying they would like to see some video interviews... we don't really have the capabilities for that right now. Our name isn't as well known as an MMAJunkie or something and plus we don't have the funds to send reporters out to a fighters gym to tape an interview. I would absolutely love to see it in the future and I think it's possible in a year or two but right now it's not feasible.

Speaking about interviews, how do you guys organize stuff like this. Im just wondering. And do you send the questions to the fighters via mail or something or just have a normal interview ?

I understand fully it was more of an idea for the future. However having said that. Given that some phone interviews have taken place i think it's possible that some audio could be available for some interview pieces.

I'm not in any way demanding it or anything lol, but i think it would be a cool thing to really look into.

It all depends on how the fighter wants it done. When I did my interview with Jon Jones I first talked with ToeZup because he knew Jones' trainer and told him I was interested in doing an interview. He then gave me his trainers phone number and I called his trainer and said where I was from etc and we set up a time for me to call Jones and he gave me his number. Then I called Jones on that day and did the interview over the phone.

Most of the other interviews we've done on the site have been through email where we first contact the fighter or their trainer through their website and say we'd like to do an interview and if they agree then we put together some questions and email them to them and they email their answers back. Then it gets edited etc.

Oh yeah I fully agree and like I said I think it's a great idea. Phone interviews seem to be a little bit more rare then just email ones though so I'm not sure how getting the audio onto the computer would work.

I actually still have the tape of when I interviewed Jones but it's on a recorder and I have no idea how to put that onto the internet.

Some of you guys are lucky. I've never met ANY MMA Fighter, never mind talk to them (Hopes to change it when UFC comes back to UK)

doesn't work....I demanded the death of Lotus long ago and he still roams free.

Yeah i can think of some ways to get your recording on the net, but it would involve recording your recording, which would prob kill any quality.

Maybe the next time a phone interview was done or was going be to done someone could figure out a way to get it on there PC and hosting from there wouldn't be a big deal.

Like Jamie was gonna do a phone interview with Njokuani, i think, but he couldn't do it given his location. So if someone on the staff from the states was to do it that would be a great chance to try and get the recording on the site.

We need to acquire members that live in Vegas, then maybe it would be more feasible.

We should just tell Bail to stay sober and get away from the tables for 30 minutes while in Vegas so he could do an interview. haha

if all goes to plan and paul daley is cool with it i will try my best to get a video interview with him at the seminar , no promises but if he is cool with it it could work.

I'm working on getting the Sloppy Slugfest back. Been busy with renovating/moving, and have only recently finally got settled (even though I still have a ton to do), so I've hardly had time to post regularly on the forum, let alone write articles.
