It's been a while, but I actually wrote something...

Quote:
There were two big events in the world of combat sports last weekend. In East Rutherford, New Jersey, Nate Diaz and Jim Miller fronted the third UFC on Fox event, while in Las Vegas, Nevada, we saw Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Miguel Cotto headline what could be the best selling boxing pay-per-view of the year.

Both cards delivered. Both main events gave us impressive performances and both audiences went home happy. In terms of star power, though, there was only ever going to be one winner.

In Floyd Mayweather Jr., boxing has a star that MMA (and the UFC specifically) can only hope to ever equal.

Money, son. Money.

Thoughts?

He does wish he had a star like Money. Undefeated, cocky and brash, incredibly skilled and most importantly, regarded as the best fighter in the world. Dana White dreams and loathes having the best fighter. He still believes Anderson Silva is.

But then again, as long as he can convince himself that he has the worlds best fighter, he doesn't have to pay them anything over 7 million and fight and he can keep the rest.

Really great article Jack. I definitely agree that while Dana would love the PPV sales I don't see him giving away that much control. He can't control SF and look how he has pretty much given up on them.

I am very suprised there aren't more MMA fighters though that try to sell themselves. Everyone is always so damn quiet and respectful. Yet they see guys who talk making big bucks and being promoted. I mean I am naturally a quiet person but when I want to and make an effort I can be loud and outgoing and cocky. Don't see why MMA fighters can't do that.

Dana would kill himself if he had a fighter who was as big a draw as Floyd, but more importantly someone who was as business savvy as Floyd.

No way Dana could deal with not winning a pissing contest with one of "his" fighters, and that's exactly what would happen with a guy like Floyd.

Jack.............I miss this.

Fantastic read and DW has wet dreams of creating such a star, too bad that DW's ego is that of a megastar PPV that it would be near impossible for him and the star to ever co-exist.

Great article.

Dana would need to do something like the large movie studios used to do in the 30's and 40's; place, in this case, fighters, under contract, make them big and draw the crowds, but pay the fighter(s) peanuts. When the contract comes up for renewal, somehow BS them into believing that he is actually doing them a favor by paying them and that what they are doing is not that big...in the meantime, he's raking in the money. The biggest problem with this is, everyone knows about it and Dana would have to look long and hard to find someone dumb enough to fall for it.

Great article. As the article and many others have said. Dana would love to have a guy who he knows would net him 1 million+ buys every time. However Dana would hate to give up the kind of money and control it would take to keep a guy like that happy. One because he obviously likes to keep the bulk of the money and two because i think he fears the possibility of a fighter becoming bigger than himself in the sport. And i think he ultimately fears a fighter becoming bigger than the UFC. Because the day a fighter becomes bigger than the brand is the day Dana and the UFC could face some serious comp. If that fighter became too pricey he could venture out to another org or make his own, etc.
