Number of player:
League - 13 on the field, Union - 15 on the field. Scoring: League - a try is worth 4, and the conversion is worth 2. Union: try is worth 5, conversion is worth 2. Tackles: In League, once the player is tackled, play basically stops. The defending team (apart from 1 or 2 markers who stand in front of the tackled player) must go back 10 metres from where the tackle happened, The tackled player gets up, puts the ball on the ground, and rolls it backwards with his foot to one of his team mates (called a play-the-ball). This is when play starts again. They also only get 6 tackles before they have to give the ball to the opposition, but they will usually kick before this happens. In union, this happens: (couldnt find any good videos for League) When the ball goes out (into touch): League - They will have a scrum, but it is mostly uncontested. With the team that "feeds" the ball into the scrum having a large advantage. (they also have scrums in Union after minor infringements, but it is much more evenly contested because the feeding team has to feed the ball in more fairly than in League.) video of a union scrum: as you can see they do alot of pushing to contest the ball, but because in League the team that feeds the ball in has a large advantage, there is relatively no pushing or contesting, because the feeding team will pretty much always get the ball. Union - when the ball goes into touch, they have a lineout. it is contested, with the throwing team getting the advantage. Both teams do the jump, but the throwing team will call out their plan to eachother, so they know whats up. What's you're team?

Yeah, man. League is like Union's fruity little brother.
The All Blacks will wipe the floor with everyone in next year's World Cup, and I will hopefully be there for it. England should get to the Quarter Finals. I'll be cheering for Fiji and Samoa as well as my home nation.

Rugby just bores me TBH. I can watch the big games, with good atmospheres, but the comparative lack of skill or tactical prowess on display (IMO) to other sports I enjoy just takes a lot away from the experience for me.
I used to play a bit, albeit briefly, so it's not just like I don't understand the game (although I'd hardly call myself knowledgeable), but it just doesn't do it for me.

I absolutely can not comprehend how anyone could make an argument for NFL > Rugby
Yes I said NFL and not Football. No body else plays that shit except Americans (CFL HAH!) yet you feel the need to take the name of the biggest sport in the world.

Love this sport. I wish it was televised more often here in Canada, but it is really only on Setana (or whatever the hell it is called) and I cant get it with my student package.
Although we did get a preview earlier this month. Caught a game between the All Blacks and Australia. Incredible to watch that skill level. I reallly hope the next world cup gets some more publicity. |
