Christ. I have just sat through the first 20 minutes of Skins US. I had to turn it off because it is so awful.
Don't get me wrong, I think American TV is the shit. Boardwalk Empire, The Wire, Oz, The Sopranos, House, The Shield, Breaking Bad, Californication and Dexter are all amazing shows and piss on any UK based drama made ever. The remake of the Office I thought was also good, it took the characters in their own direction and was very funny with it. I even think Shameless is ok, even though William H Macy is a very unconvincing drunk and loses the subtlety of David Threlfal's Frank Gallagher. But Skins US is the fucking worst. For those who havent seen the UK version, there is a character called Max, who is a gay fella and in the UK, to establish how close he and his friends are, they are supposed to grudgingly be joining him on his 'big gay night out'. The US version makes Max an extremely hot female cheerleader that is a lesbian. This makes the characters instantly unbelievable. A 16 year old male would be BEGGING to go on a night out with lesbians, not grudgingly joining them. I dont know wether or not this reflects how poorly MTV think about its viewing demographic, that they couldn't handle a reasonable portrayal of a gay person, rather than some sort of porno fantasy. It wasn't the only thig wrong either...another main character called Cass in the UK, is supposed to be a kooky mentalist...OCD and eating disorders but generally upbeat. When they introduce her (too early) in this one, she is borderline psychotic. Fucking stupid. Anyways.Rant over. For now. |

Get Carter is probably one of the worst American remakes of a British cinema classic. In general the lack of inspiration in the cinema of today pisses me off, too many adaptations of easy-selling book narratives and unnecessary remakes of classics, simply re-packaged with big names but with half the intrigue/charm of the original. In short: leave my fucking classic films alone, Hollywood.

I hated the remake of The Departed compared to the original.
