Welcome to FLD. If you were the ref in the Lesnar vs Carwin fight, would you have stopped it in the first round?

I don't feel like I would have. But those calls are similar (IMO) to baseball home plate umpires. Each ump has his strike zone, and for lack of a better term so do fight referee's. When your truly on your game and into the moment, for me anyway, there usually isn't a moment when I decide to stop a fight - it just sort of happens. Like a home plate ump calling strikes and balls, you just sort of hear the call, not alot if any thought goes into it.

One aspect of this fight is that it's a title fight. As a pro fighter I am going to let you essentially "go out" before stopping the fight, especially at that level. Amateur fights, undercard pro fights - not so much. There's no point in allowing a fighter who is obviously beaten continue to absorb punishment.

Rosenthal was in good position the whole time and it appeared to me that Lesnar's lights where still on the entire time.

I will post an article soon that relates directly to stopping fights. Thanks for the question.

Welcome to the forum! Now for some questions.

What do you say to the fighters to begin the fight? You know Big John has his "Let's get it on!". What do you say?

How much do you talk to the fighters back stage to tell them what you expect and also to gauge their level of crazy?

What's the worst unsportsmanlike incident you have had to deal with? A la sucker punches etc like Daley vs Koscheck?

I always start out with the fighter on my right and point to them with my right hand saying "Fighter ready?" Then pointing to the fighter on my left with my left hand and "Fighter ready?" then my right hand back out in the middle old school point karate style and yell "FIGHT!" Makes for some pretty decent pictures here and there. I understand the value of catch phrases and self promotion in our sport, but the reality is people aren't there to see me, I'm not the show - the fighters are. What I do is pretty boring, but professional.

We hold a fighter/second briefing with everyone in the same room usually about an hour before showtime. There we cover all of the rules and procedures. There's an opportunity for those in attendance to ask questions. If there's someone making a debut or I havent seen or reffed before I usually catch them and their seconds in the locker room briefly just to get a baseline on them and ask if they have some questions. There can be some doozy's at times.

I've been fortunate to not have any un-sportsman like incidents inside the cage, but I have had some pretty serious foul's that where accidental and required a pretty good "come to jebus" meeting with the offending fighter and his corner along with point deductions. I have had teams from some of my fights go after each other in the locker room, post fight. But I was still in the cage working when that occurred.

Negative. Anyone touches me, they go to jail. Period. It's a felony where I work.

Any memorable ones you would care to share?

The most recent was a corner man who interrupted my briefing in front of 20 fighters, 30 corner men and the athletic commission agents to ask if I would let the fight his fighter was in go on longer than usual (past my usual safe stopping point) because his fighter usually gets his ASS KICKED in the first part of fights and then eeeeked out wins in the end.

"You know, 'cause their fighting for ten thousand dollars."

It was an amateur tournament (first round bout) where the two who made it to the finals would have their first pro match and the promoter was going to pay for their pro cards and give the winner $10K.

Let me assure you like I did him - it makes no difference to me if your fighting for ten million dollars or ten goldfish crackers - you're going to get the exact same professional performance from the other officials and I.

Fight hard - let me sort it out.

Do you not agree then that big fights, especially Championship fights, get a larger ass kicking window than normal fights?
