This coming Saturday, MMA fans around the world will finally have to answer the question they've been asking themselves for the last few weeks: "am I willing to pay $45 for a product that I am used to getting for free?" Ever since Zuffa purchased World Extreme Cagefighting, they have steadily refined the organization and now have the #1 promotion for lighter weight fighters. In fact, many MMA pundits consider the WEC to be the best overall promotion currently running shows. But with the WEC’s sister promotion, the UFC, running the PPV business model, it was only common sense that they would eventually follow suit.
On April 24th we will have the option of viewing the first of these PPV broadcasts. The WEC’s match-maker has really pulled-out all the stops in trying to ensure this show will be a success and I personally feel this card is not only worth the PPV price, but much better than the surrounding UFC PPVs. One of the featured bouts, and a major reason why everyone should consider purchasing this card, is the rematch between Benson Henderson and Donald Cerrone. Their first meeting which took place at WEC 43 was voted through many MMA outlets as ‘Fight of the Year’ and their second encounter is sure to produce more fireworks.

Stop by a mixed-martial arts forum, any forum, and there is no doubt that somewhere there, you will find a thread dedicated to discussing Fedor Emelianenko and his standing in the sport. There will be no jovial atmosphere in this thread, very few jokes and – largely dependent on the overall atmosphere and commitment of the moderating staff – it may have gone so far as descending into a war of attrition between two unrelenting sets of debaters. The ammunition quickly becoming irrational criticism of both Fedor himself combined with his previous opponents, or the current crop of UFC heavyweights vying for the Russian’s throne as the man to beat in the division.
On one side of the fence, you have the avid Fedor followers, fans that have supported him since he initially staked his claim to being the sport’s greatest fighter while climbing, and eventually dominating, the PRIDE heavyweight division. On the other, you have the Fedor critics, usually fans of other heavyweights, excited by the UFC’s newly invigorated heavyweight division. Both sides are made up of usually rational MMA fans, yet the mere mention of Fedor sends them into frenzy, feverishly trying to out-do one another as they attempt to tarnish the legacies of either Fedor or his UFC contemporaries. Supposedly proving their own point by defaming the other side, their arguments become more and more flawed as their bias and refusal to acknowledge any weakness in their own argument takes over.

Ronaldo Souza dos Santos, better known as “Jacaré” Souza by the many BJJ and MMA fans across the globe, was born in Vila Velha, December 7th, 1979. During his younger years, Jacaré was a huge soccer fan and played regularly --preferring the role of the goalkeeper. Souza carried on playing throughout his teens up until he was seventeen when he met his first instructor and master, Henrique Machado. Machado a 5th Dan Judoka and BJJ black-belt under Osvaldo Alves immediately saw potential in the young Jacaré who was still small for his age, weighing only 50kg.
Machado took the young man under his wing because of Jacaré’s humble personality and brought him into his home, where he began teaching him day and night -- not only about BJJ, but the nutrition and mentality needed to be a top competitor. Soon after this, the ASLE academy (“Associação Sensei de Lutas Esportivas” [Sensei Fighting Sports Association]) was formed. Eventually the ASLE team merged with the well-respected and famous Team Brasa. This merger was vital towards Jacaré’s development as a grappler because whenever he was in Rio and Sao Paulo he always had access to the very best training partners.
